So, I posted a fic today, and as I was setting up the AO3 post, I found myself writing in the end notes an impassioned - almost desperate, ngl - plea for comments. For interaction.
And yeah, for validation too. Because you know what? Writing is hard - despite commonly held misconceptions, it takes a shit-ton of effort to take some blank, empty void of a page and fill it with something that lives and breathes and touches the minds and hearts of others.
And don’t you dare wave that “you should be writing for yourself” bullshit in my face. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve been able to do that, and honestly I’m glad managed to recover as much as I have and write as much as I do. Having an audience is an integral part of the writing process.
Let me repeat that.
HAVING AN AUDIENCE IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE WRITING PROCESS.
We fanfic authors don’t ask for much. As someone who is a published author, who has been published in a Real Physical Book™ and was paid hundreds of dollars in Honest-to-God cold-hard cash for less work than I put into my fanfic, let me tell you, a few comments will not pay my tuition or buy my groceries or put clothes on my back. Compared to the hours of labor that went into earning the money I was paid with, comments take substantially less time to create.
And yet, to us, they are priceless. Authors will create entire worlds for the sake of making a single person smile. YOU CAN BE THAT PERSON. WE WILL WRITE FOR YOU HAPPILY.
You just have to let us know you care.
And you’d better do it soon. I’ve heard too many authors all too willing to pull their tumblrs and erase or abandon their fics on AO3 because they have grown weary of screaming into the void. That fanfic you love? Gone. That chapter you’re waiting for? Never gonna happen. How many of you have bookmark lists with fics already missing? I bet you won’t even remember which one it is.
You can keep that from happening. Just write “Omg thank you for updating, I really liked _________!” and fill in the blank. Someone worked hard to put that smile on your face. You can make them smile in return.

This is why I’ve started treating watercast like an actual work piece cus PPL LEAVE ME COMMENTS AND IM RLY ATTACHED TO ALL OF U??? I don’t want this feeling to end ahh ;A;

Watercast Appreciation Post
Oh my god it’s so fucking long, it’s like 2k words, people can ignore it, jeez, I talk too much
Since it’s Christmas time and it’s a period all about spreading love, I thought it’s a great time to share my love for @fishwrites’s Watercast (and since I can’t just draw fanart of it and be done with it, this is gonna be a veeeeeeeery long post). Now, Watercast has come to be one of the most well known fanfics in Klance, along with Dirty Laundry and On Thin Ice. For those who don’t know anything about it, it’s an AU in which humans, merfolk, avians and Galra cohabit Earth, and for obvious reasons, problems are expected to arise and Lance ends up saving Shiro and Keith and they, then, proceed to get stuck in a cave with Lance and Hunk looking after them until Shiro gets better. If you’ve never heard about it before, it’s more than worth a read. Anyway, so, obviously, since I very quickly became obsessed with it, I started going through the Watercast tag on Fish’s blog. I came across many stunning works of art and read a lot of the trivia on this world that she came up with, and I only wanted to immerse myself deeper into it as I went on, so, naturally, when I saw a post where the readers were asked if we would be interested in a printed copy, I went ‘Hell yeah!’. And then I found out that Watercast was an original work before it was a Klance fanfic and I went ‘Fuck yeah’ because this absolutely breathtaking masterpiece was an original and could possibly be published in the future? Sign me the fuck up, I want one, two, three copies, and I will pay extra to have them signed. What saddened me, though, was that Fish herself said that she didn’t think it could get published. Now, as a writer myself, I get the frustration and the uncertainty that comes with working on something, and I often don’t think I could get published, but having said that (and since my stuff is nothing to compare to Watercast), I want to move on from this painfully long introduction and tell everyone why Watercast (from what we’ve seen so far at least) is a wonderful piece of fiction (whether it be fan fiction or not) based on characters, relationships, plot, worldbuilding and overall composition. Let’s get this started.

i don’t think people really get how little feedback fanfic authors actually get? like the effort to reaction ratio is so abysmally skewed here that a fic nearly 50,000 words long takes an entire year to amass like. 16 comments. someone reblogged a fic i wrote at 4 am and tagged it with a 5-word compliment and i can’t stop thinking about it, not because it was so nice but because half the time you post a fic you’re going to hear nothing and anything feels like so much
fandom culture is so, so good about giving artists the credit they’re due, but we gotta start doing that for writers too. you’ve got no idea how much people put into their stories and get maybe a handful of reblogs and a dozen-odd kudos. that’s not enough. writing is an endurance sport and y’all need to start giving fic writers a reason to endure it and improve their craft. encourage writers like you encourage artists. reblog fics, leave tags, leave comments, acknowledge that these stories do not just spring into being for your entertainment.
every single damn writer i know feels like at least their readers see them as a machine. that’s gotta change.
every time someone comments on my fic, it makes my whole day. all of my fic on ao3 combined = more words than the average novel; but hearing back from readers makes those hours spent writing fic 110% worth it. comments mean a lot to us!!
