Back in 2014, the beginning of materializing a dream took place when Diane Rivera Estella decided to pursue a degree as a Digital Cinematographer. During her teenage years, she discovered her passion as a Videographer and Photographer, giving place to perform as an amateur and a hobbyist. As soon as her studies began, a series of video productions and collaborations made her fall in love with the Digital Cinematography Industry. As part of her projects, she traveled to Puerto Rico, the enchanted island that saw her come to this world. The scouting for video productions guided her to the most precious beaches and historical places. Her specialties include aerial photography and videography. Now in 2018, as part of a short term (12 months) goal she just began a journey of studying Journalism with the main purpose of improving how to investigate the real facts and how to report the real findings of he event. All of these would be to improve her favorite storytelling style, documentaries. As a mother of one child and a wife of a military husband, her motivation in life is always to be open to improve to achieve perfection and help others to reach it as well. Every day is an opportunity to learn and get sparked to create.

New Media Journalism Final Project - Mastery Journal

For this project, I provided three mastery goals that I have set to myself. Perform as a professional inside the news industries was my first goal. By achieving this goal, I can ensure that my image as a Media Journalist is seen as a professional individual who takes the career seriously and that is reliable and willing to perform at any time.

The second mastery goal is to become a master inside the journalism. It is imperative for me to fully understand the responsibilities of being a media journalist. If I want for the management and the company to view me as a dependable journalist, I need to become a master at my craft.

The third mastery goal is to perform as a documentary filmmaker. Being a filmmaker is not an easy task because there are many details in which the journalist has to be focused on. The journalist does a documentary film in order to instruct, educate, or maintain a historical record and these are three areas of the filmmaking that I see myself performing as a professional and as a master.

In the process of achieving my goals, I have some strategies and tactics which will help me achieve my mastery goals. The first strategy would be to continue to study all of the content in each course and if a question arises to ask appropriately and conduct additional research in order to fully understand.

The second strategy would be to give the best of me. Giving my maximum effort will help me to achieve the desired goals. Everything requires effort to succeed.

Lastly, the third strategy would be to complete the journey. Studying the courses and materials and giving the best of me will help ensure that I complete my journey and become a Media Journalism.

New Media Publishing and distribution Mastery Journal

My expectations of the course were to be able to conduct an investigation based on the topic to be presented, produce a report based on the data collected in the investigation, and distribute and publish the findings of the compiled data to the targeted audience.

As I focused on my expectations, the course also had expectations of me as a student. The one expectation that the course had for me was how to make the information available to the intended audience correctly. The information can be published to any audience available, however; not everyone should be reading what I publish. This is why the course aimed to provide guidance on how to carefully select and make sure that the correct audience was selected.

For this course, I felt that the most helpful content that helped in my learning experience was in how to select the correct audience and how to correctly publish and distribute the information and make the information available to the intended audience. This content brought to my attention that I need to be focused at the moment of delivering the information to the right audience. In the event that the correct audience is not selected then the whole purpose of the investigation, distribution, and publishing of the findings could be considered a failure.

This course has tremendously helped me and prepared me to move forward as a journalist. I have always wanted to pursue to become a journalist, but back then I was not able to find the right program to continue being a journalist. This course prepared me in multiple ways such as being objective and determined. Although there was plenty of information available, I wasn’t sure how to focus objectively and elaborate on a specific topic. This course prepared me how to better elaborate on a subject after finishing the investigation and begin to build a product.

Original Objectives

As part of the projected goals for this course you can encounter the desire to be ethically responsible, this is the ability to recognize, interpret and act upon various principles and values according to the standards within a given field and/or context.

Have an impeccable reputation, this part can be described in different ways such as, turn negative attacks into opportunities, always be fully transparent, always do what you say you will do, cultivate your personal integrity before all, take control of your character and protect your reputation like your life depends on it.

Having high moral standards is always necessary, morality demands integrity of all who govern their lives by high moral standards. Moral integrity has courage and self-discipline to live by one's inner truth. It is a function of feeling whole, total, entire, complete.

Learned from the Course Content

This course turned out to be most helpful at this point in my career and studies. I have learned that during these past weeks that building and managing a reputation takes time and effort, this is a process on which an individual takes the time to show everyone how reliable he or she can be. Also, maintaining reliability comes with a significant effort to build up a healthy relationship with the audience and showing them transparency at all times. I have learned the differences between public relations and journalism, including how to give advice to publicists’ behalf of me being a journalist.

How I am going to apply what I have learned

Now more than ever I feel the urgency to follow the rules and maintain my word as an individual of honor. Perform as a person of integrity says much about the person who really I am, this impression is going to represent me forever.

The first expectation is how the information that we post on social media affects the audience. The second expectation is to identify the social media trends. The third expectation is to win the audience attention and respect. Taking time to review the analytics of each of my social media platforms helped me understand the areas where I am performing fruitfully and those where I need to improve. Researching social platforms trends is necessary before posting an article, this can guide you towards what the audience wants to read and learn.

I have learned to use social media platforms as a journalistic tool. Social Media platforms can help a journalist to find newsworthy information and simultaneously allow them to promote their stories directly to their audience. Also, I have learned about the integration of YouTube which is a social platform on which as a journalist I can post my videos, those videos can be watched by millions of users if promoted on other social media platforms. How to find an audience and encourage them to continue reading your stories is another strategy learned during this month. One of the most important aspects when using social platforms is retainability. A good journalist retains its audience by using reliable sources and maintaining transparency.

As a journalist the more prepared and informed you are about social media and online community engagement the more reach out you are going to have. Knowing your numbers about the audience reach out can help you identify which communities are needed to get impacted. The social media platforms are a useful tool for a journalist when used correctly because if you don’t use them wisely, they can damage your whole reputation and credibility.

Multimedia Reporting Mastery Journal

The process of crafting a story from ground zero takes time, effort and a large number of reviews, after this process is finished it makes me the owner of my stories. This is what all of this is about finding something that is going to catch the attention of the audience with real information from reliable sources. The main goal for me inside the Multimedia Reporting was to wisely manage all the information collected after conducting a research. This is the only way I can impact a targeted audience taking in mind that I am delivering real, concise and verifiable information.  

When a reporter builds up a trustworthy relationship with the audience it makes the reporter have an impeccable reputation. This part is essential to any journalist if the individual does not have that reliable image is going to be almost impossible to succeed inside this industry. The attributes of an excellent journalist are to be cautious and responsible when managing information especially when managing sensitive information.

This month learnings have put me looking in another direction, that direction is looking towards the way I need to always verify my sources authenticity. I have learned to conduct multiple interviews and take the most important part about the story and incorporate it within the article, including visual media and audio. Also, I have learned how to incorporate graphics, photos, videos, and podcasts all together having in mind to not overcrowd the article only using the necessary elements to deliver the information.

From now on it can say that I am more prepared to deliver newsworthy content, a content that can be trusted about the real information from an event. This course prepared me with an essential tool, that tool is the power of wisely manage all the information. Also, I can say that having knowledge about how to combine and incorporate various elements within the same story is valuable and necessary
