The rapid advancements made in data storage technology mean that faster, more secure solutions like flash storage drives and SSDs are becoming more affordable. However, optical hard drives are quickly becoming obsolete. If you have an old hard disk that you wish to replace with a lighter, smaller and more efficient SSD, you may want to get rid off the other one. You could endanger any private or sensitive information that was stored on the old hard drive if you get rid of it. Knowing the best way to get rid of an old hard drive is important.

There are tools you need to disassemble a hard-drive
It is essential that you have the necessary tools to take out and destroy hard drives. For internal hard drives that are connected to your computer but not yet attached, you will need:
A Torx screwdriver can be used to remove the cover holding the internal pieces together
A flathead and tapered-end tools like a metal strip, or a pick for prying the case open.
A hammer is needed to smash the parts
Alternatively, you may use a drill or a nailgun to poke through the circular plate -- the rotating disk in the hard drive that contains the data.
For external hard drives, it might be a good idea to use the flathead driver we have mentioned. Because it can also be damaged by the plastic case that must be cracked open, this extra step is required.
The main components consist of a stack of magnetic disks or platters. These are usually made of glass, ceramic, and protected with a fine latter of steel. Sometimes, the platter can also be made of aluminum. These parts will be found in addition to the platter.

How to physically delete an old hard drive permanently
