It is finally sinking in...two weeks ago, I spent the last day as a public educator! I am RETIRING from education after 23 years as a teacher, reading specialist, literacy/reading coach, trainer, inclusion specialist and department chair in 3 states and 4 school districts! It will be OFFICIAL on August 15th! I feel truly blessed to have worked with general, special needs and at-risk students in elementary, middle, high school and college-level reading and English! The true focus of creating a #mentoring program for #girls came from my oldest daughter, Sholann @sassymissy83 I began teaching in September 1997. She was in the 9th grade. She had been in Girl Scouts since kindergarten. She expressed that Girl Scouts had a lot of programs but it did not have anything where girls could connect with women one-on-one. I went to Big Brother Big Sister. After one year, she was matched. When she got in the 12th grade, she suggested creating a mentoring program where high school girls could also support elementary and middle school girls. I spent the next two years developing Young Essence Ladies...Learning (YELL!) It began as a mentoring referral agency in Atlanta in 2003. She has been the backbone of YELL! Programming since February 2006 when its second program was chartered in Houston, Texas. She has a unique and special gift which connects her with girls and she has utilized that gift at public and charter elementary, middle and high schools. Also, in community centers and apartment programs. It’s going to be exciting to see some of the girls who have gone through our program and her reconnect at the 30-year anniversary May 31-June 2, 2019!!
