âREMEMBERING THEN AND RESPONDING NOWâ (5/27/19)
âBut me he caughtâreached all the way from sky to sea; he pulled me out of that ocean of hate, that enemy chaos, the void in which I was drowning. They hit me when I was down, but God stuck by me. Â He stood me up on a wide-open field; I stood there savedâsurprised to be loved! Â God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before him. Â When I got my act together, he gave me a fresh start. Â Now Iâm alert to Godâs ways; I donât take God for granted. Every day I review the ways he works; I try not to miss a trick. Â I feel put back together, and Iâm watching my step. God rewrote the text of my life when I opened the book of my heart to his eyes. â (Psalm 18:16-24 MSG)
For you living in the United States of America, today is Memorial Day; a day for remembering and honoring those who have served and died in the Armed Forces of our country. Â Certainly, we must take some time out of our day to remember those individuals who are most deserving of honor for the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. Â
For all of us, regardless of our location across the globe, any day or every day is a perfect day to remember the sacrifice of Jesus on Calvaryâ cross. Â He gave His life for you and for me! Â On top of that, it is always a good time to remember âthen;â the times that the Lord intervened in some incredible way in your life. And after remembering âthen,â it is the perfect time for responding ânow.â Â If you agree, break silence as you read! Â Say aloud, âAmen!â
David gives us a pattern to follow as we praise God, remembering âthen;â remembering all he has done for us individually.  For surely one day you were falling either deep in sin or in response to some desperate times, or when the world tried to overcome you with a flood of hate.  But remember âthen!â  âThen,â when it was the Lord who reached down from heaven and pulled you out!  âThen,â when chaos in your life was crushing you, but elevate your thinking and remember âthen,â when it was the Lord who relieved the weight of your anxiety or the heaviness of the circumstances that were trying to hold you down; down in disappointment, down in depression, down in determination, down in defeatism, or even down in a feeling of being deserted!  Whether it is a declared Memorial Day or not in your part of the world, look back with thanksgiving, remember âthen,â when lifeâs happenings hit you so very  hard or even when the emissaries of Satan were pounding  you to the point where you were ready to give in!  But start rejoicing, because at that time, you remember âthen,â when the Lord stuck by you!  He did not just stand by you, but like He did for David, He stood you up from a feeling of lowliness.  He saved you! You felt unworthy, but you got a surprise: God still loved you and He was showing you, back âthen.â
Canât you remember âthenâ or even the multiple âthenâ times when God made your life complete and as you presented Him all the pieces, and âthenâ He put you back together again! Â Please remember all the times we can refer to as âthen,â times when the Lord gave you a new start! Â I donât know about you, but I can remember the multiple times, too many to count, that He did that for me and Iâm certainly glad about it! Â Take a little time today and when someone else thinks you are being quiet or perhaps momentarily unsociable, just tell them that you are being like David, remembering âthen;â reviewing the ways that the Lord works, as evident on how He has worked in your life!
After remembering âthen,â spend some time recommitting to responding in this time we call ânow.â Â Feel how He put you together and demonstrate that togetherness, ânow!â Â Watch your step, ânow!â Â Respond ânowâ to how God changed your story and rewrote the text of your life! Â Do so by living a life that you are not ashamed to reveal in an open book before the eyes of the Lord! Â Remember âthenâ and respond ânow!â Â Enjoy your day!
âTherefore I will give thanks to You among the nations, O Lord, and I will sing praises to Your name.â (Psalm 18:49 NASB)
Still committed to the climb,
Mark L. King
