words, not my name but the names of others. the tattoos i’ve kept on my heart since i realized i could love. do you know what it feels like to dig a knife into your heart every time you fall in love? a crack down the middle like a river. like the river that slices my heart in half when it slices the city in half. like the river i’ve been knee deep in since childhood, not knowing which bank is the safest, not knowing how to return to shore. red marble, like the blood that hides behind my collarbone, waiting for too-sharp teeth. like my tongue on yours. like the colour of the river in springtime. white marble, like my skin, stretching over sun bleached ribs, tearing at the seams. like the colour of the river in wintertime. dirt. something so indescribably, inescapably human. something to hold back all the holiness, all the awfulness, when the sky is screaming my name. like the dark bruises on my gloriously human skin.

“More?” Jeong echoed, tipping his head to one side. He shifted, studying Sean over his shoulder. What did he mean by ‘more?’ Did the offers not sound appealing?
Rolling his lips together, his brow furrowed, and he offered a small smile, struggling it through his confusion. “D-do you mean, like…like sex? B-Because, I mean, if you– if you don’t want to, it doesn’t have to…or it can, I mean…” His cheeks flushed a light pink, flustered over the words he tried to force out. “Is that what you mean?”
His eyes shot open, startled. "No! No, that's not what I meant," he said immediately, giving a quick shake of his head. "I . . We can . . No, we can talk about this later. A lot later." Sean hadn't meant anything by it, only having been wondering if what they had meant that there had to be more to it. A shift in titles for each other, plus kissing, was more than enough for him. "Never mind, Jeong. Really."

His mind felt empty. For once, like he felt only when he smoked too much, there was nothing there, nothing to think too hard on. He had a memory of Tai-Yun, but no, no, this was different. This was what he wanted, wasn’t it?
Eyes shut when Sean spoke, they flickered open slowly, groggily. Jeong’s frown was small on pouty lips, but he gave pause. What did it mean?
“I…I don’t know. I hope…it means…I can call you my boyfriend, ne? And…we can kiss, and cuddle…And…well…what do you want it to mean?”
“You can, and . . we can,” he said, his eyes still shut. “Does it have to mean more than that?”
If only he could bury himself into Jeong’s warmth and settle there forever, he would. To simply be able to calm his mind for a bit would be more than pleasant, and he considered bringing up one of the other’s past offers, but quickly cast that thought aside. Later, maybe - as in another day.
I’ve felt a country in your touch, skin like topography undiscovered; I want to take you home tonight. Then follow whatever direction you break into. Let me put it this way: sometimes your smile takes me places I’ve never been, somewhere like Europe. Call me North America, I want to put the continents back together. I want to take my time. Pull my fingers across every strip of land, get them stuck in certain valleys. Let them stay, soak, in the moment. With you, I could travel forever.

Perhaps a year ago he would have laughed at the prospect of this ever being possible. Never once would he have ever thought that this would have happened, but he sunk against Sean’s warmth, cuddling close to him.
His hand slid over his friend’s arm, twining their fingers together. Dasik gladly took the moment to force herself on the bed, flopping her body down in front of him. Needy and persistent, she peeked up and over Jeong’s shoulder at Sean, tail wagging against the blankets when she had confirmed that he was, in fact, still there.
Even with Dasik there, his nerves were high, and he shifted so he could look at Sean if he desired.
This may have been the same, but it felt different. This was what love did, he supposed, when it was returned; it changed things.
"Jeong," he murmured after a while, his head resting lightly against the other's shoulder. "What does this mean?"
Sean realised his question was rather vague, and he tried to find better words for it. "What does the fact that you love me and I love you mean, for us?"

He wasn’t screaming. He didn’t look angry, didn’t look upset, and Jeong couldn’t help the little grin that filled his face. Sean felt the same.
“I will.” Nodding solemnly, he let go of Sean’s hand, standing again to move to his closet. Changing quickly out of his yoga pants and chiffon top, he chose instead a much simpler pair of worn pink flannel bottoms, leaving his shirt and pants folded up on the dresser. Curled on his side on the bed, he reached out, poking at the wet tip of Dasik’s nose where she lay beside the short bed.
“Are you going to stay?”
The soul eater gave a nod at his friend's words, pulling his legs to his chest and resting his socked feet against the mattress while he waited. "Yeah, of course," he said, looking to the neatly folded clothing. For a moment, he debated on going to change, but his sweater and jeans were more than comfortable. His decision made, he lay down next to Jeong, shifting close and resting an arm around him. Maybe now that they'd both gotten their confessions off their chests, they could rest for a bit, even if sleep didn't come.

Following behind him, Jeong combed his free hand through his own hair, as if pulling at the locks would make him any less nervous. A squeeze of his hands, yes, that had to mean something, but perhaps to Sean it meant nothing more than an agreement that he would accompany him.
The lights were dim in the room, but the sunshine shone through the diaphonous white of a canopy, hanging over the windows and the short bed. He stood there for a long moment, his thumb sweeping over his bottom lip. He could only stare down at Sean, holding still to his fingers.
“I meant it, Sean.” God, but he didn’t want to say this, but he couldn’t leave it longer than tonight. He had to say it. Finally, he sat down beside his roommate, not letting go of his hand. He hesitated, but quickly, he leaned forward, slanting a small kiss against his lips. Pulling away only enough to speak, he paused. “I…I love you.”
He meant it. He meant it.
Those words would have been more than enough for him, but more was happening, and he felt Jeong’s lips meet his as they had only a few days before. He flashed his friend a faint little smile, holding his hand more securely.
“I love you too.”
How long had it been? Two years, three? Several, to be sure, since he had first developed a crush on his best (and only) friend, but more than that since he’d made a promise to himself to never ruin what they had. Leaving one family had been hard enough, at the time; to abandon Jeong in the same way he had his family would have been more difficult than removing his own leg.
“But, Jeong-- nap; I wasn’t kidding.”

I want to be with you.
Why, he wondered, did he hopelessly hang on to every word that hung out of Sean’s mouth? No doubt, he looked stupid, with his brow furrowed and his mouth hanging open. He begged those words to mean something more. He begged that there was something in those words that was serious, something more real than just wanting to keep him company.
Sean had just killed a man. Jeong had pushed him to, he’d asked if that was what should be done, and, by all technicality, it was humane. It was what needed to be done, or the man was going to live a hopeless, empty existence. And here he was, very much a child as he had always been, kneading his fingers together and staring down a murderer, and all he could feel was in his heart, nothing like fear or anger but only unadulterated confusion.
Still, like a child, the words fell out absently, wishfully, in a whimsical whisper that he almost hoped Sean didn’t hear.
“I want to be with you, too.”
His lips quirked into a small smile, and he gave Jeong's hand a light squeeze. Of course he'd heard him - they were too close for him not to have - and he hoped the pyromancer meant them as much as he did.
Without a word, he tightened his grip on the other's hand, threading their fingers together before leading him up the steps. At the top, he turned towards Jeong's room, then pulled him towards the bed.
"I was serious about the nap."
Sean seated himself on the edge of the mattress, looking up at his friend the way he always did. They'd been close to each other for a while, but did all the confessions from the past week change things? Were they going to be different with each other from now on?
Such change might have been good, but it had the potential to be bad, and he was scared.

Turning, Jeong seemed to stumble, Dasik bumping headfirst into his legs. She looked back to Sean, her tail wagging though she’d seen him only a moment ago. Silent for a few seconds, Jeong seemed to study her. Some days, he knew, it had to be wrong, listening to animals more often than people, but people were filthy, deceitful, confusing – at least animals had pure intentions.
Fingers smoothing across the top of her head, he pinched at her ear, thumb sweeping over the fine white fur there, finally looking up at Sean. “If you want to,” he murmured. “I mean, you probably want to be by yourself. Go to your caves or something, yes? You don’t…have to keep me company if you feel obligated to, Sean. You’re not.”
"I want to be with you," he stated, meaning it in more ways than one. "I don't feel obligated, it's what I want - but if you don't want it too, I can stay here. It's fine." The double meaning continued as he spoke, sure that Jeong would pick it up. He had to, didn't he?
His thoughts drifted to the man he'd killed earlier, and a pain of longing entered his body. Surely he couldn't want another, so soon, but he did all the same. Perhaps tomorrow, when Jeong was in the garden, or doing yoga - and he'd be sure to kill whoever it was this time, to keep him from seeing any more of those empty shells.

Gaze trembling, Jeong gave a slow nod, swallowing hard. He didn’t want to, but maybe it would be for the best. He just wanted to be held, to cry and accept the truth of what had happened, to understand that he was, in fact, with a murderer.
Prying himself from the table, Jeong kneaded his hands together, calling to Dasik. She limped in from the living room, looking up questioningly.
“We’ll…be in my room. If you need us,” he breathed, patting the top of her head and starting off to the stairs.
Sean paused, watching his roommate head off for a moment before going after him. "Jeong, wait," he said, catching the pyromancer by the hand before he got up the first step.
"Do you want me to come with you? I can stay down here if you want some time, but . . ” The soul eater trailed off, hoping Jeong would accept his offer. Maybe being alone with his thoughts right then wasn't the best idea for the other, but he did need some time to collect himself, didn't he?
Perhaps Sean could offer nothing besides companionship right then, but at least he was trying.
Brother, Where Art Thou?

“I’ll be fine,” he grunted, because he would. Even if he had been in a bad way when it happened. “Just caught some shrapnel in that last big earthquake. Pathetic for a terramancer, but what’s done is done, right?”
Cian nodded at his brother, knowing he had made the right decision no matter how hard it was. “I reckon you’ll give them a heart attack if you do,” he said, the corners of his lips twitching. Then he looked around himself, taking in the area and the dog.
“So you live here then huh?”
"Ah. My roommate and I were down in the shelter when it struck,” he said, nudging Oreo in the ribs again as he put the coffee on. “It’s not pathetic; it’s not like you could’ve controlled it.” Earthquakes were too much for any one terramancer to control, he was sure.
Sean gave a nod in response to his brother’s words, knowing their family would be surprised, but didn’t say anything to it. Instead, he moved on to the question he was posed with, though he crouched down to scratch the puppy behind the ears as he spoke. “Yeah, though we haven’t been here too long.”

Sniffling, Jeong’s eyes slid shut, running his hands through his hair. All he’d watched to do was save a hurt man, help a man who’d been lost on his property. And they’d killed that same man, disposed of him like garbage, yet his heart felt no different. Was he sick? Disturbed, perhaps?
“M-Maybe,” he breathed. Sleep didn’t seem like it would come easy, but he didn’t want to exist right now. “Sean, I…” He’d said it, out loud, but it was all right, the timing was wrong, he shouldn’t have said that yet. “I’m sorry. This is my fault.”
"It's not your fault at all," he said, reaching out with his free hand to rest it lightly against Jeong's cheek. "It's mine. I'm the one that did that to him." If only he'd killed the man, it might have been better - or if he had control over himself, which he never truly had.
"Please, go take a nap." Sean hoped his friend would listen; if only the pyromancer would go to sleep, he himself would have some time to think over what he'd done.
Brother, Where Art Thou?

Cian nodded along to the boy’s description. He had never had red bean paste in his life - in fact he wasn’t sure he had had any bean paste before. But it seemed to be something devoured in this house, so he would give it a go. “Sweet, okay,” he breathed, hoping his stomach could handle sweet.
Perking back up as Sean turned to him, Cian gave a small nod. “Yeah… yeah everyone’s alive and well. Seems they had better luck than I did,” he answered, hovering his hand over his wound as indication. “I haven’t told them you know, and I won’t unless you want me to.”
He’d been trying to ignore his brother’s injury up until then, but it was difficult to gloss over when Cian was so obviously pointing it out. “Are you sure you’re alright?” he questioned.
"Thank you," Sean said after a moment, glad he had not. "I'll tell them on my own, if I decide to."

He was going to be ugly-crying soon. His free hand covered his mouth, eyes clenching shut at the other’s words. He couldn’t tell him that, he couldn’t tell him now, but it was too late.
“I don’t want to say it,” he whimpered. “But I already did.”
Sean paused, not sure what comfort he could possibly give him right then. “Do you want to go take a nap? I can . . clean up around the house, take care of the dogs.” It wasn’t a lot, but he wanted to give Jeong some time to process everything that had happened.

Sean enjoyed taking souls. That news came strangely. It didn’t feel right, and yet, it didn’t hit him as hard as he expected. Maybe he’d already been prepared for it.
Still, he was hesitant, and he nodded slowly. “I’m sure I don’t.” Then– then, his brow furrowed. When he was seventeen? He’d been seventeen when they met, and that meant…
That meant that he’d been eating souls the whole time they’d been together. Together didn’t sound right. He’d been eating souls the entire time they’d lived together, all the while laughing, playing, wrestling, being boys, and Sean had been murdering people.
“T-thirty, maybe, I don’t…I don’t know…Sean…Oh, God, Sean…”
“Are you still sure?” he questioned, keeping his fingers on Jeong’s wrist. “It’s okay if you’re not. It’s okay.” His voice dropped to a whisper, the words he spoke next foreign on his tongue but true all the same. “난 여전히 당신을 사랑합니다.” Sean turned his head, lips brushing lightly over his roommate’s fingertips in the semblance of a kiss.
