Alwright, we need to talk about modern dubstep aestheticism.

Rant below the cut ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It’s not quite controversial to say that dubstep (and wider electronic music) has very little real-world imagery as part of its aesthetic. some people may say that it’s part of the appeal of dubstep. It’s an escape to a world where the emotions derived from the music are the norm. The emotions in question usually being reckless hedonism or some other shallow form of joy or anger. I really wish this wasn’t the case. It doesn’t even have to be the case. part of the reason dubstep is most strongly associated with emotional shallowness in its lack of real visual identity.

I feel that most other genres of music are grounded in there ability to be replicated in a live setting. Rock, hiphop, pop, and country all have live precedent and thus a human connection between listeners and artists

Electronic music however, has always been mediated by some sort of machine. Be it the computer or DJ mixer, there is always something in the way of personifying the music.

I think the solution to this is iconifying dubstep musicians. I see alot of furries in the dubstep scene and their fursonas provide a much needed memorable visual aspect to otherwise fantastical music. The simple addition of an icon to associate the music with elevates the inhuman to a more amicable level.

i'm going to get crucified for this but i actually think skrillex's current day style is actually fine to me. i grew up with emo skrillex and obv i'm very nostalgic for that but i just want to be clear we're talking about a real person and stuff yknow. i think what's very clear about skrillex's old style vs new style is that as faggy and beautiful as he was in the myspace days, he also seemed unsure and a lot less confident in himself (especially evident in interviews), i really think that's important to consider.

he's still pretty, just older, wiser, and more confident now. it's not the same, but it's still worth celebrating to me. both eras are awesome.

I think that Grape Milk (the musician) needs to be the next big dubstep boy. I mean, he looks so much cuter than skrillex (just look at him!!!)

and his music is sooooo much more interesting than anything else I’ve heard. If the new face of dubstep has to be a man 🤢 it should be Grape Milk!!!
