SIGHT. small towns. big cities. six thirty curfews. lights that take the place of stars. blanket nests. light through the blinds as a wake up call. found family. finding a single star in the middle of new york city. window shopping. watching something terrible and enjoying it. growing numb to the sight of injustice. wilted flowers. faded caricatures. bright, bold colors.
HEARING. crickets and lightning bugs. car engines and a / c units. a phone call to mom / dad. laughing with friends. jokes that are so bad you have to laugh. the clicking of computer keys. noise cancelling headphones. the sound of silence. muffled music from another room. drumming fingertips on a table. clicking of pens. listening to a clock and swearing the ticks get slower. ringing in the ears. the voice of someone you love. pitch shifted songs.

there’s a switch in georgie’s brain named medic, and it’s welded to permanently on; she knows it drives her family mental, when she’s home, and that she can fuss over her boyfriend a little too much, but it’s good, isn’t it, that she cares about people? that she wants to look after them, that she wants to help? doesn’t matter if they’re her best friend or someone she met five minutes ago; if they’re in need, or even if they just need a bit of a chat, she’s there.
( she never thinks about what it takes out of her, to be there for everyone all the time. she never asks for something similar in return, even though it’s un-fucking-deniable that she needs it.
the world is a terrible place, and georgie has spent a long time living in its darkness, a long time being hurt by the people in it. if she can provide a little light for someone, even if it’s just sticking a plaster over a gaping wound, isn’t that something? she wants to do good. she just thinks she fails at it, most of the time. )
it doesn’t matter to her that she doesn’t know the american, or that he is american. he’s here, he’s talking, maybe it’ll be cathartic. for him, hopefully, anyway; from georgie’s perspective, they are straying into dangerous territory, and she forgot to bring her weapon. ❝ which time? ❞ it doesn’t come out as light as she wanted it to. her fingers tap on her knee, and for a moment, she chews her lip. ❝ there’s been a lot of shit. ❞ none of it is first meeting material — though she guesses he could google her, if he really wanted to know. ( which is…bloody creepy, if you ask her. that’s what you get for being front page soldier rescued from hostage situation; civilian dead / rescued soldier saves manchester news, she guesses. ) but what kind of arrogant twat would she be if she just said that, eh?

it’s an artful and elegant avoidance, georgie’s words remind wes of his mother ( though those memories were faded with time ) a turn of phrase and a slight-redirection of the conversation, that’s how she kept the peace with wes’ father who was a stubborn and opinionated man. it makes wes even more curious, and blue eyes focus on the woman with renewed scrutiny. there’s been a lot of shit. the sentiment was a familiar one and he doesn’t miss the heavy weight in her tone, another reason to let the subject of her turn toward him. he wouldn’t press, some wounds were best left alone until they were ready to be tended to. where to even begin? he decides to give the topic a little space to breath, taking a look out toward the foreign horizon through a window with dirt stained edges. stranger or not he wasn’t usually one to just dive into the deep end. for wes it was never very easy to talk to anyone, though he always wanted to. when it came down to what he should say, well that was the hard part and left him biting back his words before all the wrong ones came spilling out of his mouth. ( textbook over-thinker ) he’d been more open and honest once, back before basic, a shade of naive coming off a life of being home-schooled in near-total isolation. you learned quickly that necessary survival skills included watching your mouth, keeping your head down, and not drawing too much attention to yourself. though, he’d impressed where it mattered. all those years of hunting with his father, used to the weight of a rifle in his hands, it had given him a slight edge in the beginning. ❝ don’t think talking to anyone if ever very easy, ❞ his voice is soft, contemplative but willing to give some if she kept talking to him. ❝ but you seem like a nice type, and maybe you’re right to some degree. ❞ there conversation had started heavy, perhaps it was a good thing to lighten the subject matter. ❝ i guess today i’m just feeling a bit far from home, got to thinking too hard about being out here is all. ❞ wes appreciated her words of kindness, maybe they did get points for doing good, he’d award her some for her efforts in speaking with him. ❝ where are you from? if ya’ don’t mind my askin’. ❞

Are you basically optimistic or pessimistic? optimistic and hopeful
What is your greatest fear? being buried alive. it’s a literal fear, not claustrophobia.
What are your religious views? wes’ grandparents were evangelical protestants whose religion was a very important to them. his parents weren’t very religious in their everyday lives, and his immediate family didn’t attend a regular church service. when wes and audrey stayed with their grandparents they would go to their church and participate in sunday school. mostly what he remembers about those sundays were the potlucks.
What are your political views? wes considers himself a moderate conservative. his parents and grandparents were all registered republicans, but when he turned eighteen he registered democrat - probably audrey’s influence.
What are your views on sex? he considers it a natural part of life, enjoys it a lot. he doesn’t have many kinks or fetishes. vanilla virginia boy. though he is very curious and is usually willing to try anything once.
Are you able to kill? Under what circumstances do you find killing to be acceptable or unacceptable? wes is able to kill, skilled and trained to do so in fact. he’s only ever killed under orders and even then he questions the morality of what he’s doing. it is not something he takes or does lightly.
In your opinion, what is the most evil thing any human being could do? hurt a child. he doesn’t understand how people that abuse children in any capacity are able to live with themselves.
Do you believe in the existence of soul mates and/or true love? he does believe in true love, but not in the traditional sense. he believes people can fall in love at first sight, but that true love is built from that initial spark. love is something that grows and needs to be tended to and taken care of. it’s a partnership of equal contribution and compromise.
What do you believe makes a successful life? hard work, dedication, and compassion.
How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings (i.e. do you hide your true self from others, and in what way)? wes does have a tendency to hide his true self, this wasn’t his inclination when first leaving home, but he learned quickly that others are prone to judgement and he likes to get a good feel for someone before opening up too much.
Do you have any biases or prejudices? he was raised to have similar conservative view points as his father and that came with the baggage of different social, economic, and political biases and prejudices, though as an adult he has worked though a lot of that and had shed many of those thoughts and opinions.
Is there anything you absolutely refuse to do under any circumstances? Why do you refuse to do it? wes could not bring himself to intentionally harm an animal or a child. he would have to be under extreme duress to even consider it and someone he loved would have to be at risk, and even then it is only a remote possibility he would be able to follow through on it.
Who or what, if anything, would you die for (or otherwise go to extremes for)? family, loved ones, friends, innocent people, others given the circumstances.

the table was set, a small but sturdy wooden circlet that wes had saved from a salvage yard and restored, covered in a white linen and lace table cloth. candles of various shapes and sizes had been lit, set out on little glass dishes or nestled in old mason jars and placed around the small wooded-clearing. it wasn't far from the small camper they'd been sharing for the last few weeks, maybe a five minute walk. kara of course had no idea what he'd been up to out here for the last hour or so - taking a break from his real work of constructing the framing for the house they'd soon be living in. it had always been his dream to build his own house, on his own land, and now he was making that dream a reality.
virginia was surprisingly mild for mid-october. still the autumn air was crisp and refreshing as wes put the finishing touches on kara's birthday surprise. he was sure she wouldn't remember telling him, as there were more than a few empty hotel room mini-bottles drained and scattered at the time of the omission, but she had confessed the date of her arrival in the world and he had been quick to take note. he didn't like to forget the little things about a person, especially one he'd grown quite fond of, and he'd always believed in the importance of celebrating someone's life. if anything, his time in the military made him more steadfast in making sure she knew how important her being there, alive and trying to rebuild, was to him. he'd seen too much loss to take for granted the time they had together.
he'd built a small fire pit away from the table, and had been cooking up some of his family's best cast iron, campfire recipes, including a special birthday cake surprise. there wasn't much in the way of gifts, but he'd collected a few items he felt worth wrapping and had them bundled and awaiting her curious fingers. wes couldn't wipe the smile off his face as he walked back to retrieve the guest of honor, he'd been holding this SECRET behind his tongue for a while now and he couldn't wait to let it free. it wasn't hard to get her to come along, offering that he required her opinion about something. ( she had quite a few of those, and readily dispensed them ) although as she eyed him and his wide grin, he was sure she knew he was up to something - could see in her eyes that he wasn't fooling her for a second. still he grabbed her sweater and held it aloft for her to slide her arms into, quiet the only response to kara's questioning look. when they were on the trail he slid his hand into hers, fingers linked while letting his thumb trail along the soft skin of her wrist in an idle wandering. he can see the moment her eyes light up as they reach the clearing and he hopes his eyes tell her exactly how much he cares when she turns to look up at him. it’s in this moment he hopes she’ll realize that she is as much a part of his life now as his own family, and that he would do anything for her. ❝ happy birthday, kara. ❞
