The story these garment tell is, “Where we are from”.
They represent our history, culture, and family background and are inspired by past generations - For Example, what our ancestors wore in the past.
The show helped tell the story by each of us saying “Where are we from”using the story from the wax cotton.
Where I’m from there is dirty rats, shelters, cigarette smoke, loud music, unclear beach water and pricey hotels
First we made a circle scarf.
Then, we made a denim skirt.
After that, we made a shirt out of waxed cotton.
Finally, we prepared for the show and presented it for our parents.
Where I am from, Ghana, Jamaica, New York
there is the big blue ocean
people walking on the street and heat from the sun
where i’m from the Joker and Batman play with Star Wars. Pepper steak and rica taste like pineapples and Coca-Cola.
Where I’m from, people walk down the street wearing weaves thinking its their hair.
I’m from Puerto Rico where there are sweet canepas and pinapples and pretty aland for you to play.
Were I’m from my grandmother makes sweet treats for the family.
Were I’m from there are water bugs sweet and crunchy.
This bird here represents Sankofa. Sankofa means to go back into the past and carry information into the future for a good cause.
In the process of learning about fashion and Sankofa we also learned about waxed cotton so since sankofa means to go back to the past and carry information to the future for a good cause we related it to waxed cotton which is a type of fabric. How does waxed cotton relate to Sankofa? Answer: There is information about the past that is carried to the future to talk about where did Sankofa come from. This relates to what we were learning about because in the process of all this we were learning and sharing things about where we are from.
These garments tell ‘Where We Are From’.
This says that history has come a looooong way because when a shirt is passed down, the person puts their own twist on it.
It also tells where most of us are from.
It could also say that it was passed down from generation to generation(tradition).
Our poems tell the story.
First we made a circle scarf. Next we made a skirt made of jeans. Then we made a skirt and a shirt out of wax cotton. Lastly we all got together and put on a nice show for our families.:)-Jalynn
We made a circle scarf using wax cotton.
Im from the smell of frying longanisa coming from the bodegas.
We chose denim pieces and stitched them together to make a skirt.

How do people see you? How do you see you?
Who are our people? Where do we call home?
What are our celebrations? Festivals?
How do you define you?
where i’m from
How do people see you?
Cyanotype inspiration : Where I’m From
Where I’m from
It’s a hot chilie pepper
With rain as hard as hail
The drops coming like a wall of tennis balls
bouncing hard and loud
on the packed clay earth
Where I’m from
My people drowned a little, farmed a lot, and huddled in tight quarters
Where I’m from
There were First People here first
My people came and swept them all away
That land, the land, was once all theirs
Now it’s a napkin corner
With the desert as fringe
Where I’m from
The first people wove their stories & my people followed
with weavings of their own
Where I’m from
The color pink was got from the prickly pear
And the world over washed in the royal color
Now faded into the dry clay
Where I’m from
DY Fashion Clouds created circle scarves using waxed cotton. We added our own prints to personalize the scarves with original ideas that represent where we’re from.
