3. SANOFI AND REGENERON PHARMACEUTICALS

Sanofi Genzyme is taking an active role in helping research initiatives become a reality by offering research grants to ten innovative projects designed to improve the lives of people with immune-mediated diseases (the “Type 2 Innovation Grant”). 

The objective of the Type 2 Innovation Grant is to support independent, novel and innovative research projects investigating Type 2 immune-mediated diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma or chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) (or “Type 2 immune-mediate diseases with relevance in clinical practices”).

Qualifying research grant applicants will be requested to select between two disease areas, Dermatology or Respiratory and, in this latter category, applicants must also choose if their proposal is related to Pulmonology or Rhinology. The applications will then be evaluated against predefined criteria by two independent panels of international experts, one per disease area. 

Areas of focus include: 

- research projects investigating Type 2 immune-mediated diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma or chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) (or “Type 2 immune-mediate diseases with relevance in clinical practices”)

Life Spine Announces FDA 510(K) Of The Steerable PLATEAU® Ti System

Life Spine, a medical device company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets products for the surgical treatment of spinal disorders, announced today that the it has received clearance from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to market the Steerable PLATEAU Ti System.

“The Steerable PLATEAU Ti System is one of many novel systems slated to join our Micro Invasive portfolio this year,” said Michael Butler, President and CEO of Life Spine. “These launches are testimony to our continued dedication in supporting less invasive procedures. The Steerable PLATEAU Ti System allows for controlled delivery upon insertion to facilitate positioning in the anterior portion of the disc space and features a curved design to match patient anatomy and maximize endplate coverage. Additionally, the spacer was designed to restore patient sagittal balance with lordotic options of 7° and 12°.”

The Steerable PLATEAU Ti System is available in lengths of 28mm and 32mm and heights ranging from 9mm-14mm in 1mm increments. The system also features Life Spine’s proprietary OSSEO-LOC™ Surface architecture of 400-600 micron porosity. Stryker's TREVO XP ProVue Retriever is a clot retriever for patients with ischemic stroke. Clinicians can view the retriever under fluoroscopic imaging while performing the clot retrieval. 

According to the company, this allows for enhanced delivery and placement. 

The retriever comes in a variety of sizes, including 3x20 mm, 4x20 mm, and 6x25 mm.

COVIDIEN’S SOLITAIRE™ FR REVASCULARIZATION DEVICE

The Solitaire FR Revascularization Device is an advancement in the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The Solitaire device is used by interventional radiologists to recanalize the major cerebrovascular arteries that become occluded during a stroke leading to infarct of brain tissue distal to the thrombus.

“This new device is taking acute ischemic stroke care to a new level," said Dr. Vitor Mendes Pereira, Department Chairman at Geneva University Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, and Principal Investigator for the Solitaire FR for Acute Ischemic Stroke study. "It clearly surpasses the first generation of clot-removing procedures, which were only moderately successful in reopening target arteries, and gives us a far superior tool for revascularization in stroke patients.”

Retrospective data collection from European sites experienced with the use of the Solitaire FR, when used as 1st choice device to treat patients with ischemic stroke and restore blood flow. Six European centers treated 141 patients for acute ischemic stroke using the Solitaire FR, as first intention device, in relation to their own clinical practice which involved the use of mechanical thrombectomy devices and pharmacologic agents from March 2009 to June 2010.

FLOWGATE BALLOON GUIDE CATHETER

FlowGate Balloon Guide Catheter offers proximal flow control and a stable platform to facilitate the insertion and guidance of an intravascular catheter. It provides a balance of trackability and support with a large lumen and is indicated for use as a conduit for retrieval devices.

FlowGate is a new and unique BGC. It is easy to use, less stiff, and has improved trackability from bench testing that could possibly allow smoother delivery into the distal cervical and proximal petrous segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA). This feature allows it to possibly work more effectively and more completely, resulting in more reversal of flow given its more distal location. 

The 8-F model has a 0.084-inch inner lumen allowing for more aggressive aspiration as well as concomitant use of intermediate large-bore aspiration catheters for salvage techniques as needed.
