This isn’t a joke y’all. I have kids at my university who sleep in the parking structure because there nowhere else to go that they can afford. Rent for a one bedroom can be more than three grand a month. On campus housing charges 900$/mo for criminally decrepit housing. They are homeless, but it’s “fine” cause they can shower in the gym and their friends who can afford rent hook them up with free laundry space in the dorms. All the while these kids are trying to get Bachelors degrees and working 20 hours a week to make tuition, just to end up working the same meter-reader jobs they could’ve gotten fresh out of high school because no one can retire at 65 because social security and disability keep getting slashed out of the budget. Being a student is already such a nightmarish mess to be in in the first place.

“Working homeless” isn’t a looming reality, it’s already happening, and it trains students to blur the lines between home and work before they’re even sucked into Capitalist America.
