A black queer one womyn show festival

January 9-12, 2019 at 18th & Union Art Space

This project is a supported in part by 18th & Union Arts Space and The Hansberry Project.

Earth Pearl Collective Presents their second annual black queer one womyn show festival, Sovereign at 18th & Union Art Space January 8-12th, 2019. There will be three different programs rotating throughout the festival with an opportunity to view all shows back to back Saturday January 12th.

This year’s lineup features D.C. based poet and vocalist, Patience Sings, from the peace and body-roll duo BOOM-scat. Her soulful tones will introduce you to the beauty of grief in her Seattle Solo debut of “Good Grief.” Local favorites will include Gregory Award Winner for Best Actress in a play, Aishe` Keita, with her new one womyn show “Griot,” which opens the festival on Wednesday January 9th at 7:30 pm. Aviona Rodriguez Brown is also premiering brand new work celebrating and dissecting the intersections of being a “mixed race” Afro-Latina in her autobiographical piece, “Aviona.” Naa Akua, began warming hearts in the theatre scene in their debut performance in “Welcome to Braggsville” with Book-It Theatre, and is now combining their sound healing work with their art in “Akwaaba.” A city-wide sweetheart, Briq House, the mastermind behind the all POC burlesque show, “Sunday Night Suga Shaq” has teased us all, and in her new full length solo performance, “Lessons from the Pulpit,” she lets us know how it all began.

Join the cast and crew for a special preview party and panel discussion on Monday night January 7th at 8:00pm to get a snippet of what the shows are about and get the inside scoop on how and why they were created. Then, there will be refreshments and dancing.

What happens when queer black women die at the hands of police brutality? What happens when those women are mothers? What happens when those women are in a holding place to cross over? What happens when those women are invisible & forgotten? Queer, Mama. Crossroads examines these questions through the lens of three women with the audience as witness to dissect layers of systemic police brutality, racism and silenced queer voices to discover/uncover what happens whey the women have transitioned from earth to the crossover waiting room. Covering themes such as intersectionality, systemic violence and paranormal possibilities, Queer, Mama. Crossroads seeks to dismantle and rattle anything you think you already know about being a queer mother at the crossroads of death.

Seattle, WA - Earth Pearl Collective presents Danni Cassette and mBtheLight. Two vocalists who swing pure energy and sound into the ether to shift the very narrative to which our bodies ascribe.  Both vocalists twist and bend sound in an experimental fashion to shape an experience for the audience.

Danni Cassette is a singer [audiogiver], songwriter and vocal arranger. Her commitment to origin and originality has framed her career decisions, musical compositions, and even her name. Danni Cassette was born March 25th 1988 in Sacramento, California as the first born to Alicia Ann Harris-Calhoun and William E. Calhoun III. Although family and friends can recall Danni’s musicality from an even earlier age; the pivotal moment that Danni recalls was at the age of three when her grandmother gave her a Fisher Price tape recorder. The gifting of the tape recorder marked the beginning of Danni’s way to journal as well as to compose harmonies. Danni Cassette grew in skill under the instruction of her grandfather, and church community and was very soon acknowledged for her gift. Which confirmed for Danni Cassette that music would be her life, whether it was through the composition or the performing of it. 

Danni Cassette’s first EP “The Land of Tapehistry” released December 2011, conceptually reflects that message and the work that is to come will continue to inspire the world of everyone willing to listen, to live boldly, freely. Although met with many adversities in pursuit of her passion, Danni Cassette continues to work hard to attain the vision she’s had since the age of three playing with a toy tape recorder. In 2012 Danni decided to leave everything behind to get in her car and travel the country. With not much money, a trunk full of cd’s, and a whole lot of hope Danni was able to travel the entire east coast and Midwest. She took a gamble on her art! After touring for almost three years she’s now remerging with her current single “Right Away” from the forthcoming  project, “B L O O M”. Danni Cassette’s artistry aspires to leave the world a legacy of fighting through struggle, finding acceptance of oneself through elevation, and staying connected to one’s humanness. Danni is a crusader against how digital our world is becoming.  She believes she’s not of this time, but for this time.

mBtheLight (Formerly known as Monica Blaire) is a Detroit bred talent who's vocal style is rooted in improv & rhythm. She loves to live in the moment of a song and constantly challenges the line between  performance & art.

After becoming a 2010 Kresge Artist Fellow in the Performing Arts and touring in 2014 with Tyler Perry's Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned, mBtheLight is gearing up to take the world by storm with her powerful performances and uncanny musical expression. mB has worked with artists ranging from Roy Ayers, PPP, Dwele, Black Milk, ZO!, BB Boogie, and Waajeed.

mBtheLight's latest project is experimental music with a minimal approach that is dubbed "sound art: visual art for your ears". She is playing with the everyday around her and creating sonic snapshots of her experiences. With voice as the driving force and foundation of this medium, this music and the process of making it is introducing her to the world as an avant-garde music innovator. Look for her upcoming EP "lofi" in summer 2018.
