Items from the Preslav Gold Treasure, late 10th century

Veliki Preslav, Bulgaria.

The Preslav Gold Treasure was discovered in 1978 in Castana, near Veliko Preslav. It consists of 10th - century women's jewellery made in Constantinople and Preslav, but it also includes older artifacts dating back to the period between 3rd and 7th centuries. The treasure was likely buried sometime between 969 and 972. This was the time when Preslav was besieged and Sviatoslav I of Kyiv and two years later by the Byzantine Emperor, John I Tzimiskes.

#brb - gonna look uo trade between thus region and northumbria bc my best girl needs some pretty jewels #<- op here #not sure if there was any direct trade but if you're looking to get a pair of these to her #there were Bulgarian traders in Constantinople since at least the early 700s #and also in Thessaloniki #they basically traded with anyone in the vicinity of the Balkans #but I think a ship from Constantinople might be the easiest way to reach there #alternatively if you can get a pair of Roman earrings to her they would be very similar in design and style

According to the museum blurb, this painting depicts a mother, accompanied by a group of women, bringing her daughter to school for the first time. That the women are Turkish can be seen from their colourful clothing and the yellow slippers that only Muslims could wear, according to sumptuary laws (dress codes). A servant carries the girl’s embroidery frame. Needlework was a favourite pastime of women in affluent Turkish circles. Women held in slavery did the household chores.
