I really love this shot because it feels like Jim is finally the successful fruit of John’s efforts. He’s behind him while Jim stands strong with the gun, gaze hardened. Both facing the same direction, the teacher and the student. Visually you can see it: made in his image like clay.

If he would have the guts to commit suicide, that would be fine, but he doesn’t have that. So, I guess somewhere in his mind, he comes up with an idea that if he can just find somebody who gives a little shit, that he can have some fun with—and then he’ll ask him to just take him out of the way.

It was the first big role for him and I loved him for who he was, because he was so gentle and so so easy to play with, and he just allowed me so- I could just kiss this guy (Jim) and he wouldn’t even budge, y’know. To you, I’m in total agreement, although I believe Hannigram has HalRyder energy, and also weirdly enough the Hitcher even predates Manhunter! but let’s go through it!

The third act of this movie matches almost exactly to the finale episode of Hannibal, wherein the main character trusted by the leading law enforcement character (Esteridge/Jack) goes out of his way to go with the prison van transporting the killer because he knows he’ll kill all the guards and escape. And he tells the law enforcement character that he has to be the one to both free and kill the killer. In the script of the Hitcher, Jim explicitly teams up with John by giving him a key to pick the the handcuffs in their handshake. Like how Will would sit in the prison van and help Hannibal break out.

Out of jealousy and hurt from rejection of the MC, the killer murders women close to the MC to break him. For Jim, this is Nash. For Will, this was Beverly, Abigail, the attempt on Molly’s life. All fridging attempts to upset the character enough into lashing out at the killer, John/Hannibal, because it gives them the sole attention they seek from Jim/Will.

Both killers are continuously grooming the MC into becoming a killer themselves.

Initial rejection from the MC leading the killer to give himself up to authorities sullenly so the MC cannot escape him truly.

Homoerotic back of the neck holding.

The interrogation eye fuck seduction and spit in The Hitcher matches the prison Will Graham "Please." scene in season 3.

Saving each other from the harm of authorities or other killers so they are saved to kill each other.
