Your First Global Order Is Ready—But Is Your IEC?
Getting an international order through Amazon Global, Etsy, eBay, Shopify or Instagram feels like a major business win. However, many Indian sellers discover the compliance requirements only after the courier asks for an IEC, GSTIN, AD code, invoice and product classification.
This is where IEC Registration Online becomes important. An Importer Exporter Code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade identifies the seller before customs and other export systems. For the export of goods from India, an IEC is generally required unless the exporter falls under a specific exemption.
A Marketplace Account Is Not an Export Registration
Creating an account on an international marketplace allows a seller to display products and receive orders. It does not automatically register the business as an exporter in India.
Consider a Jaipur-based handicraft seller who receives an order from a buyer in the United States. Before dispatching the parcel, the seller may have to provide:
IEC number
GSTIN, where applicable
AD code of the merchant bank
HSN or ITC(HS) code
Commercial invoice
Product quantity and value
Buyer and destination details

Your IEC Details Must Match Your Business Records
An IEC is linked to the PAN of the applicant. However, DGFT issues it separately after an online application.
The applicant should have a PAN, bank account and valid business address in the name of the firm. A mismatch between the legal name, PAN record, bank proof and address document may create problems during filing or verification.
For example, a sole proprietor should not apply using a brand name that cannot be connected with the proprietor’s PAN and bank records. Similarly, a company should use its registered legal name rather than only its marketplace store name.
Before starting IEC Registration Online, confirm:
The correct constitution of the business
PAN-linked legal name
Principal business address
Active mobile number and email address
Bank account in the applicant’s name
Authorised person’s details
Choose the Export Route Before Dispatch
E-commerce exporters usually send orders through an authorised courier or India Post.
For postal exports, DGFT guidance states that the exporter registers with the Department of Posts using IEC, GSTIN and the bank’s AD code. PBE III is used for e-commerce exports through the postal route.
For courier shipments, the Courier Shipping Bill is a key customs document. Product description, quantity, value, GST details, IEC, HSN code and AD code should be correctly shared with the authorised courier.
Eligible e-commerce consignments valued below ₹10 lakh may also claim specified export incentives through the courier route. For such claims, the shipping bill is filed through ICEGATE or ICES instead of ECCS. Exporters must also register their AD code and bank account at the relevant location.
Do Not Forget Annual IEC Updating
An IEC is not a “register once and forget forever” approval.
IEC holders must update or confirm their details electronically every year during April to June. Confirmation is required even when there is no change. Failure to complete the requirement can lead to deactivation, although the IEC may be reactivated after successful updating.
Sellers should check their IEC status before a major sales season instead of discovering a deactivated code after receiving international orders.
