"i-i'm what?" marley blinked their wide doe eyes. they clutched the strap of their camera tighter, blunt nails scraping against fabric, some of the more ragged edges catching. they wanted to disappear into the depths of their oversized sweater. attention was never a comfortable thing to have — to be stuck under, pinned like a winged bug, for examination. "i don't think that's true," marley mumbled, "i mean, that's um, nice of you. but it's not — not accurate. you should know that."
“What? Don’t tell me you haven’t learned to kick in doors yet? In this economy?” Matt retorted, letting out a small laugh shortly after. It was kind of nice, talking to someone around his own age. Most days, he only talked to Lei, and while he loved him with all his heart, he did miss talking to adults. But interactions were oftentimes either suspicious, or downright hostile. Rarely did they meet anyone friendly, or even just neutral. So this? It was a nice change of pace. Even if he was still being cautious—occasionally glancing back at Haru, just to make sure—Matt didn’t really expect them to suddenly change gears and do something stupid like threatening him.
Rifling through some of the other shelves, he then let out a sigh and shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not.” Finding some gauze, he figured it couldn’t hurt to have some more, and let it disappear in one of his pockets. “It’s my son. He accidentally cut himself about a week ago. I tried my best to keep it clean and covered, and it looked like it was healing, but… It’s infected now. And I’m… Scared of what will happen if I don’t take care of it.” Turning towards the other, Matt looked at him with hope ( and perhaps a bit of desperation ) etched into his features. “Do you think you can help? I’ll pay you, of course. With… Whatever you want that I can offer."
"son?" haru supposed it wasn't that unusual for someone around their age to have a child, but they barely felt capable of caring for themself most days. "you have a kid with you?" they couldn't remember the last time they'd seen a child — a living one, anyway. zombies came in every shape and size. they couldn't imagine being responsible for something so helpess, so fragile. "you must be scared all the time," haru murmured, peering at matt over their shoulder, "you must be scared leaving him alone."
they grabbed anything that looked remotely useful off of the shelf and shoved it into their bag. then they hesitated. "hey, are you — have you ever been part of a community?" their tongue darted out to wet their lips. "i am." haru shuffled along to a new section of labelled drawers. "and maybe this is stupid of me but i — it's hard enough to take care of yourself, right? maybe you two should just come with me after. i could vouch for you. you wouldn't kill us in our sleep, right?" they let out a nervous little laugh, looking matt again with the same hope in their eyes, for reasons they didn't understand yet. maybe it was the prospect of being able to do something good and human again. maybe it was the prospect of a friend. "i do want to help. i mean it."

"same old, same old," sera echoed, though there was a hint of disbelief to her tone. she highly doubted that was an accurate assessment of how will was. things definitely hadn't been same old for her, even if she'd been the one to make the call on their time together. now that she'd come over to talk to them she didn't actually know what to say. she just hadn't felt as though she could continue to go on with the event without acknowledging their presence. "well," her cheeks puffed out as she briefly mulled over what to say, "it's good to see you." it wasn't a lie but it also wasn't necessarily something she thought was good to admit. "i've been same old too." not that they'd asked.
it's good to see you. the blade had already sunk deep between will's ribs but that wasn't enough for her — she twisted it slow, dragging. they could almost hear the squelch of their flesh and the grinding of their bones. she had been the catalyst for the worst months of their life. was it better or worse that she didn't know it? that she'd gotten out before that sickening snap narrowed their world to a pinprick? had she seen the slight limp they still had from across the room? fuck.
"that's good." will swallowed hard. they didn't know what else to say. they couldn't fathom what she would want from them after she'd made it crystal clear that she didn't want them in her life. "i, uh," will inhaled deep and slow, "got a new job, actually — are we supposed to be doing this?" they shook their head, ducking it low, eyes stinging, "do you want to make small talk with me? seriously?"
Jesper had just gotten back from a three month shoot a little over a week ago, and maybe he was overcorrecting for the three months of hard work by non stop partying. His poor neighbors had probably gotten used to living next to his sibling, Luka who was living in the place while he was away. Quiet and respectful Luka who listened to their music at an appropriate volume and didn't have a carousel of men and women coming through their bedroom. Now, Luka was back in home in Sweden working at a test kitchen for a few months while Jesper hoped the integrity of his movie would survive the editing bay.
He opens the door revealing his neighbor he'd only really seen in passing. "Look, I get the music has been a little much but we don't have to resort to cannibalism. I feel like we're missing a few crucial steps," he offers with a crooked grin, surely not going to help her righteous rage.
"maybe you already have," she retorted, petulant, eyes narrowed, "where's the pretty one?" éile barely remembered the man towering over her. he'd been gone some time and the pretty one, as she'd dubbed his replacement, had been blessedly quiet. a dream turned nightmare. "you look thin. pale. are you anemic or the like?" she cocked her head to the side, hand on her hip, "you shouldn't take your frustrations with your own deficiencies out on your innocent neighbours." a delicate, ringed finger raised between them. "don't answer that. i don't care." the glower re-intensified.
"get a grip on yourself, man." the finger jabbed into his chest. she looked as threatening as someone below the average height for a grown woman could. "wear some feckin' headphones if you need to listen to music at all hours and try shaggin' people who don't moan like dyin' cats. or stuff a gag in. panties, socks, fingers, ball gag — just fix it." éile huffed, retracted her finger, and crossed her arms over her chest. "some of us have jobs, y'know — i'd rather not revert to the questionable behaviours of my youth because of you." but she would if necessary. "do we have an understandin'? nod."
The emptiness left behind burned on his lips when Yejun pulled away, leaving the younger man with a certain amount of desperation that was hazy enough to want to lean in for more, to throw all reason to the wind and just for a few more moments forget all that had happened. But that nickname felt like a bullet literally halting Nat as he leaned in, the formerly adored name now having the air feel sickly heavy while it felt as though his breath was stuck in his throat. There wasn't even any energy left to ask what exactly "that" was that he shouldn't have done. Just the kiss or everything else? Only with that faint touch he could inhale again as gaze wavered, beginning to blur with tears desperately blinked away. At any other time he should have pulled away, left, but now he was frozen right there. Yechan? How did Yejun know about that, Nat was certain he had told the older not to say anything. Not that it mattered now. Not that it had ever been a question that the family had stayed in contact with him. Because they made him feel like he belonged somewhere. Just how Yejun had before. "We are not okay." Finally he managed to push out some words, heavy and pained as if every syllable scratched open his throat from within. Enough to exhaust him to the point of leaning forward. Not for a kiss, but to rest his forehead against the older man's shoulder and like that he remained. Quiet.
nat's words punched a hole through his chest, through his own empty, soothing words, and left a cold hollowness behind. a cold so deep it almost burned. nat had never been one to pretend and he could never have asked that of him. "no," yejun sighed, pushing the words through jagged edges, forced to offer nat something bleeding though his pain was not what mattered, "we're not." he hesitated before lifting his hand and pressing it against the small of nat's back. slow, smooth trails began to drag up and down his spine. hopefully honest enough, because yejun did want to offer comfort, not to offend.
for all of his intelligence, he could not think of a way to fix this. this wasn't the time to bring up his feelings — yeeun needed their help — but would there be any time that made sense? probably not. fuck. yejun's world was narrowed to the tiny, warm point of nat's forehead pressing into his shoulder. he had to make things okay for nat.
yejun cleared his throat. "i'm not good with words. you know that. i — i wish i were better." for your sake. "hyung is still learning, at his big age." embarrassment flickered across his face. he was glad nat couldn't see it. "now might not be a good time but we will talk about this, if you want to. hyung will try." for you. always, always, for him.
A tremble to his lips like never before, plush and just a little sticky from leftover lip gloss as Nat pressed lightly into the kiss with Yejun - conflicted. Because this shouldn't be happening. It wasn't the right time nor the right mindset, kissing the man who had broken off all contact after a quick break up. But this moment was still enough to have him realize just how badly he had missed him, far beyond the taste and sensation of their kisses. A realization that had him release a shaky breath into their kiss, needing to gather all of his senses to finally tear away. "Hyung..." The whispered lingered heavy with uncertainty, eyes looked over Yejun's own. "I can't."
"i'm sorry." guilt wrapped around his ribs like a vice and squeezed tight. yejun had more regrets than he could possibly count by now. he would need a thousand apologies to even make a dent in the walls nat must have put up between them since their breakup — he was justified for all of it, yejun knew. he knew. "hyung's so sorry, i shouldn't have done that," tired, desperate eyes bore into nat's, "i'm sorry, jagi." the world stopped. letting the pet name slip was almost worse than kissing him. yejun couldn't breathe. was he ever going to stop fucking up? was he ever going to stop causing hurt when he'd left for that reason in the first place? he deserves better. yejun thought it would be apt if they wrote that thought on his headstone. it passed through his mind that much.
"i'm sorry." he sounded spent, raw. unlike himself. so lacking the composure he prided himself on. fuck. the pad of his thumb brushed oh so gently over nat's cheekbone. "you're doing so much for me, for yeeunnie, for yechan-hyung," yejun's voice only ever took on this softness when he spoke to nat, "i owe you so much. hyung won't make this any harder than it has to be. not again. promise." no matter how much he wanted what he'd willingly let go of. nat's lipgloss was drying on his lips and he thought, for a moment, that he should make sure it never wiped off.
"you don't have to do anything, okay?" yejun cleared his throat and leaned back a little, trying to give nat the space he seemed to need, even as his heart cracked in his chest, "you don't owe me anything. it's okay. we're okay."

"side bitch?" robin enunciated the words as if they were foreign to him. english may have been his second language but he knew exactly what a side bitch was — he knew that ash was either delusional or not using the term correctly. "it was avery and mischa's first. they found me and belén. and now here we are. so." something sly and a little awful began to take over devin's face. "might want to get their permission. or, like, you should know what you're promoting, right? don't wanna damage your brand before you even have one."
a thick, scheming silence fell over the kitchen, only broken up by the sound of them swallowing more doctor pepper. "okay." they nodded decisively. "you don't deserve it, but i'll introduce you to my girls. they can decide whether or not they're willing to be associated with you. you cover my costs for this bullshit, you let me embarrass you a little, you shout us out but not in a lame 'this is an obligation' way." she pointed her dr pepper bottle at him, "and you take me to a legit sushi place. that'll get you what you want. whatever that is." the corners of her lips turned downward, "exactly what do you expect your fake girlfriend to do? hold your hand? kiss you?"

He really didn't expect to have to call his boyfriend to bail them out, but he also didn't anticipate getting lost in the abandoned building with Elie either. With it now just being the two of them, he offers Seb a sincere smile. "I hope we didn't stress you out too much this time? Then again I can feel your heart racing from here," he teases, a hand coming to comb through Sebastian's soft hair. "I owe you breakfast at the very least."
"don't worry yourself." seb worried enough for the both of them and anyone with eyes was well aware of that. his head tipped unconsciously into his boyfriend's touch. he was sure that despite his tiredness, the look on his face was 'gooey as a biscuit just pulled from the oven', as éile had once said. he liked gus. he really liked gus. it had been a long time since he'd felt safe indulging himself in the full extent of his feelings. wasn't the witching hour wake up call a small price to pay for that?
