Prompt Eight - #picturebooks

Ever since discovering Todd Parr’s picture books on my second-year placement, I have always tried to include them in my teaching and lessons. All his books are beautifully written and illustrated with strong moral messages and bright colours. I was absolutely excited to hear Parr’s news of releasing a new book about making mistakes. The picture book would be an amazing resource to use in teaching younger students about the importance of making and learning from mistakes.

Prompt Seven - An Eerie Encounter

After searching through resources, I came across a game entitled An Eerie Encounter. The game was based upon building students to comprehension using expression and language elements. In the game, the player is required to recount a series of events based upon a short video shown. The player is provided with a series of words and phrases in which they are intended to determine who was involved, what they did and when, where and how it occurred. The game could be quite beneficial to students’ understanding and learning as it allows them to further develop their comprehension and writing skills in an engaging and interactive way.

Prompt Six - RAN Table

The RAN shows my notes and key understandings from watching the phonics debate. I was able to gain a deeper understanding about the importance of learning phonics in the process of learning to read and write.

Prompt Five - DUST

Including technology in the classroom has always been a part of my teaching practices and beliefs as a teacher. Technology can be used in a plethora of ways within the classroom from displaying the daily schedule to engaging students in interactive learning activities. The video was created to engage students in the pre-reading and prediction questions about the text, DUST by  Colin Thompson.

Prompt Four - Gotta keep reading...

Throughout my placement, the importance of reading was instilled in the students. The students would begin the school day with 15 minutes of independent reading. In reading groups, one group would always be doing guided reading with the teacher.

The students were encouraged to borrow as many books as they wanted during the class’ designated library time. The teacher always ended the day by reading a picture book chosen by the class.

When I was growing up, I always known to my teachers, friends and family as the girl with her head stuck in a book. I would always carry around a book wherever I went and to this day, I still do that. In my future teaching, I hope to inspire a love of reading with students!

Prompt Two - The 5Ws of Writing Ever since primary school, I have always tried to imbed the 5Ws in my writing. I have always been passionate about writing (especially narrative writing!) and this acronym has encouraged me to extend and further develop my writing skills and abilities. By creating posters such as this, I hope to pass on the same passion to my students 💗

Prompt One - Bedtime Bunny

Reading has always been a strong passion of mine; but my fondest memory of reading occurred when I was a mere two years old. I used to have a favourite picture book entitled “Bedtime Bunny” and my mum would read it to me almost every night before bed. It became such a favourite, that I had it memorised within the few weeks, and would even finish my mum’s sentences as she read the book to me! This has become such a treasured childhood memory and has shown me the importance of reading to children and supporting their interests with books. As teacher, I aim to support their learning but also provide them with lasting memories of a wonderful school experience and childhood.
