Happy "There Will Come Soft Rains" Day, August 4, 2026.
It's August 4, 2026 and the empty house is making bacon and eggs.
The amount of creative, brilliant, and inspired people that Hank Green is a privileged message or phone call away from only make it more of a crime that he's been slopping out his material.
If you can't use your celebrity and wealth to do your own work, hire someone else or disappear.
I don't know where else to put this, but contemporary history is important and this is lore so buckle up:
One of my favorite time periods to interrogate is the transition from the 1990s to the firmly fucked Iraq war period. Let's say 1997-2003. Obviously 9/11 is right there in the middle of it an accellerated a lot of the bad things to come, but those specified years were one era dying and another struggling to be born and it was most certainly a time of monsters. My favorite of these monsters was the embattled local reptile zoo at the Gurnee Mills Mall that rode the coattails of Steve Irwin and Rainforest Cafe into the millenium.
When I tell you that a massive salmonella outbreak was the lesser evil of this poorly run bazaar of cultural appropriation and assumed animal cruelty, I mean it.
I remember going there in 2nd grade, before my parents went insane and homeschooled us. There was a pet shop where you could buy tarantulas, frogs, and small lizards. There was a gift shop where you could buy scholastic utopian merch and apparrel that millenials of the 2020s can only dream of now. Most importantly, there was a VERY small tour of their larger animals: baby crocodiles, a snapping turtle, a few poisonous snakes (because that's what Steve Irwin was getting the best ratings from at the time), and a Guinness record holding python named Burmese Python named baby.
Baby was the big draw. She was at the end of the tour and people were desperate to get their pictures in front of her tank. I remember kids in the neighborhood bragging over what they saw baby doing when they were there. "I saw her wrapping around her log!" "I saw her eating a mouse!" "I saw her with Principle Skinner and Mrs. Crabapple in the closet making babies and one of them looked at me."
It was exciting. Animal Planet, the Discovery Channel, and PBS were a combination punch to transition the global village coffeehouse with its Paul Simon soundtrack into a world of CBS Survivors and Shakira's World Cup anthem. The world was good and my parents were mean but still socialized. I feel like the turn of the world is mirrored in Baby's fate at the Serpent Safari.
At the height of Baby's fame, a farmer off Rollins Rd. just between Gurnee and Round Lake was walking in his field and stumbled upon what must have been the most confounding and bizarre discovery of his or anyone elses lifetime. He found massive round hunks of cut up tropical snake in his field. I have spent the last twenty years thinking about what that might have looked like. I can only imagine the visual dissonance of that and shudder.
It was very clearly a python of record breaking proportions. But it couldn't have been Baby, she was still on display at Serpent Safari!
The legend tells that Baby died while feeding at Serpent Safari and the management panicked because she was the main draw. The Tribune had reported on Baby and her Guinness world record weight and everything. So they replaced her with another sizeable Burmese Python and tasked the teenage employees to dispose of the body far away from the mall. Likely being teenage stoners, they disposed of it 5 minutes west of the mall in a field adjacent to the infamous under 18 hookah lounge, "Swing State."
The legend lives on. RIP Baby and RIP the age of reptile fascination, utopian scholastic aesthetics, themed restaurants, and our innocence.
I ran a one-shot for the 7th & 8th graders at the library yesterday. I hammed it up. I had a puzzle, a trap, a tavern, a garden infestation, , handmade terrain, goofy NPCs, and plenty of combat opportunities.
It was pure joy. I never want to DM for adults again.
Reading Garden at Lake Villa District Library in Illinois. Every child deserves books and a nice place to read. Bonus points if it includes a Hobbit hole.

I really wish I had more people to talk to about this. I'm just going to reach back in time and talk to 2015 Eddie about how happy he'll be to be listening to Rudyard, Antigone, Chapman, Georgie, Madeleine, and the rest of Piffling Vale again.
Wednesday Confession: I don't get coffee from chain cafes, not because I'm a coffee snob and not entirely because I'm ethically opposed to their business practices. It's because I refuse to pay milkshake prices for things that aren't milkshakes.
