MDX Animation Student 2nd Year

Hand-in for my 2 minute film.

As it can be seen, it is still not yet finished completely. There are many scenes missing, some that are a work in progress and there’s no sound yet. Although I think it kinda works in silent too, doesn’t make sense either way.

I changed the title, the overall story is also cut in half and I kind of ended up improvising it as I went on, so I could at least have something to show until the deadline. I don’t know what people would think about this, what would be the perceived message, but I’m not too sure either. To me it perfectly exemplifies the concept of “artblock” and “burnout” by it’s mere existence...

I definitely want to work on it a little more. If I finish the missing scenes, I think I might be able to salvage it a bit. But still, I kind of like this version as well. It’s more of a collage of scenes rather than a finished animation, but I like the scenes individually. I think I managed to get a better understanding of staging, color, timing and stuff, which that makes me feel like this wasn’t just a huge waste of time. Some scenes might look pretty good on my portfolio.

In concusion, this project had a bit too vague of a concept from the beginning, and it only got more difficult to put together as time went on. I think it was a valuable experience nonetheless and I’m motivated to finish it completely... after I take a break from it for a short while.

Hand-in for character project part one, elements. I couldn’t find the time to clean-up and color it yet, but I think this looks ok for the hand-in. 

I didn’t have a concept or a story in mind, decided to just do whatever I came up with at the moment. The character is based-off a character sheet I did last year, though I’ve changed him a bit for this animation. I also did some small storyboards and sketches but I didn’t use them at the end. I actually quite like some of the background sketches, I might do another animation using one of them.

Here’s the timesheet Debbie signed for the grad assist project along with all the backgrounds I did. I first wrote down all the hours I’ve worked on my journal and at the end I copied them to the timesheet. I’ve worked 29 hours in total, so to make it 30 I’ll do some prop drawings for her as well.

This project was much more enjoyable than I thought. At first I was a little dissapointed that I only got background duty, I was aiming to get an animator job as well. But at the end it was a good oppurtunity for me to improve my composition, layout and painting skills. I also realised I enjoy drawing backgrounds more than I thought.

I was orginially assigned to both Debbie and Rute, however Rute didn’t need any help from me so I ended up only working for Debbie which is ok. She was really great to work with and was very understanding whenever I needed more time on a background. She was very flexible with my desing choices but also gave useful stylistic guides so that the backgrounds are consistent.

Process of my film so far. The timing and framing aren’t corrected yet so it’s a little awkward, I’ll properly adjust those when I clean up the scenes. 

I roughly animated the beginning shot; establishing of the room and the character. I also animated a sequence from later on my film to test the coloring and lineart and I think it turned out ok.

I aplied for a deferral until August mainly for this project because I can’t work properly lately due to my hands. Slowly but surely, I plan to finish the project until July.

I think I didn’t post about my character’s latest appearence, though it did not change that much. This is the character, Seaweed. Couldn’t find him a real name. He looks a bit different everytime I draw him, but it’s basically a sleepy looking tall guy with wavy hair. I plan to show more detail in close-up shots, like showing the white of his eyes or his stuble; and less detail for wider shots.

This is the main background for my film. It is very big and admittedly a bit too detailed, but I plan on using it multiple times.

The background will have different color palettes depending on the mood of the scene and some items will be animated at parts.

This may be very big and detailed but the other backgrounds are much simpler with little detail.

Last background for Debbie. This one was the easiest.

Wanted to use the timelapse recording feature of ClipStudio. I think it’s fun to watch.

Third background for Debbie. This one was a lot of fun to draw ^^ The layout Debbie gave me wasn’t too detailed so I had an opportunity to design the enviorement myself. 

I think I’m finally getting used to working with ClipStudio. The first bkg I did was took 12 hours, however this one took less than 8 hours despite being bigger and more detailed.

Some background and layout work I did. I don’t draw a lot of backgrounds but if there’s any need, I would be happy to assist with background designs and paintings in pre-production phase for the grad assist project.

First draft for our color project animation. I did the editing really quickly for the crit, it’ll be much more polished after I get to it later.

I wanted to add forest ambiance sounds and other sound effects as well but didn’t have the time. There are also parts where transitions are a bit unclear.

But I think overall it looks good, not the editing but our animations. Chris’s voice acting is also really good and adds so much.

I did the dead fish and the mermaid for this scene, the hand and the mushroom was done by Andreea.

The mermaid is very rough, but this’ll be it for the crit. 

I’ll adjust the framing and add camera shakes for the final cut.
