Comparing Sketches to final results and evaluation
So the first draft was good! However after going over the storyboard again I realised that some things just weren’t very flowing. While I wasn’t entirely confident with how the order was/is. I mostly had issue gathering the right footage or had changed my mind on the order of events after going through it. For example the order of the Looks, Talent and Drama sections.
The second draft I was really keen on and found simple to follow due to my colour coding. The only issue with that one was again the order of things, however less so than the first draft and when it came to production I did swap a lot of the order around for the sections but keeping the start and end the same. i also found that some footage wasn’t need and that the project worked better without it, that’s why you’ll find footage I drew/wrote about in the storyboard missing from the final product.
I’m relatively confident with the final result. I do have some issues with it. However for one of my first attempts at this kind of project I feel it’s relatively successful.
There are a few things in my final promo that I really like. One of those being the end clip of a drag queen called Detox saying ‘I’ve had it. Bye!’ because I feel like on a whole it’s funny and sums up drag race. I also feel it gives the promo a good ending and fans of the series will understand it. I tried quite hard to include funny parts into the promo because it’s airing on comedy central and is meant to be quite funny anyway along with the fact that Comedy Central often create over the top humour for their promo’s which is something I discovering during my research.Â
Another part of my promo I think works well is the section titled ‘More looks’ as a whole. I feel like this section flows really well as I set it up to essentially be 6 different clips of queens walking to runway from the beginning of the runway walk to the end each queen completely a small section of one full length walk.I also feel it flows well with the song as on the lyrics ‘Kitty girl’ it shows one of the queens wearing cheetah print clothing and doing a claws motion. And the final reason I feel it flows well is because I decided to include two clips of queens spinning in their runway outfits but edited the timing so as one spin would lead into another to basically perform one whole spin with two people.
A side note about the ‘Season one’ screen graphic with the ‘excuse me’ clip in the middle followed by ‘Season one to ten’ is kind of an inside joke to drag race fans as well as a more content joke. Im terms of Ru Paul’s Drag race, The first Season is the worst season both ascetically and content wise and is normally just written off by fans and undervalued. This is why I made the joke of only airing the first season as it’s the one disliked by fans and I thought it would provide funny content.
Something I would definitely change within my project was how some of the sound cut out at the end of clips as I feel some of the audio transitions were rough not smooth and unprofessional sounding.
However the most important thing I think I would change would be the text/graphics screens with the information as I feel they looked rather dull and unexciting however I was trying to stick closely to Comedy Central’s layout and style and this is the typical style they tend to go for. plain and simple, easy to understand. I couldn’t get access to the secondary font Comedy Central uses so I was forced to use the main Comedy Central font through the promo instead of having a healthy balance between the two. This is something I would definitely change if I were to do this project again.
All in all I’m happy with the project and feel I produced the best work I could at my current level of software ability and editing skills.
Final Project result
Follow the link to check out my final result from the advertising editing project :Â https://vimeo.com/305124980
These are my final idea’s that i came up with just as i began to produce the promo
So these were my inital drafts for my promo when i drew them in storyboard formation.
I’m an idiot
Being the idiot I am I completely forgot to actually include any of my sketch work in the blog even though i’ve talked about it previously. So the next two posts will be out of order here. Oopsies...
More Talent Plan
So for the more talent section i’m thinking of including comedy challenges, singing and dancing. The first things that come into my head are :
Chi Chi Devayne - Bitch Perfect performance
Adore rapping - ‘where my drag race crown’
Bob in the acting challenge
Cheerleading in season 9
Laganga vs Josline lip sync
Bob for president
The result of my More looks section to the promo i’m loving these cuts!
More Looks... PLan
So for the More looks sections of my promo I think I want to use :
Aquaria’s best drag look
Violet’s switching outfit look
Bianca del rio’s cheeta look
Kim Chi’s black and white look
Shea Coulee’s Construction look
Naomi Smalls’ scarecrow look
Valentina’s wedding dress look
Getting the actual fonts that Comedy Central use
Brandon Grot. and Eames Century.
Working from my sketch idea’s is great except for my lack of artistic ability.
Current mood : Excited
Unrelated to the current project at hand but I do love making these little personalised logo’s for each project relating to the project theme with my name on it. The controller for my animated persona because it was about my love for video games and now the race flags for advertising editing which is all about drag race and Ru uses the flags in his show intro. LOVE IT! <3Â
Testing
After a small amount of testing and using my chosen music audio i’ve decided that I was right in thinking ‘U wear it well’ by Ru Paul was a good choice for my advert. Loving how this is coming along so far!
So i’ve been researching the average length of TV adverts across different TV channels and have also focused on the length of Comedy Central adverts and i’ve found that on average TV adverts can vary from anywhere between 15 seconds and 2 minutes! However on average Comedy Central’s ads are usually between 20 seconds and 80 seconds. Which gives me a small leeway when creating my own advert as that’s quite a wide range. Obviously the length of the ad depends on the amount of money you are willing to spend. Due to Ru Paul being highly rich and famous I think logically Ru would be willing to spend more money for a longer ad so i’m looking at around 60-80 seconds for my own ad. In conclusion - I’m very excited!
So i’ve edited the three different entrances into one part so far just using the one set of audio. But it’s a good start!
Literally on the hunt for footage... So it begins
