Plants are sentient. That doesn't mean you must eat only fallen fruits. It means you should respect the daily sacrifice of plants and not harm them when you don't really have to. Also, vegans are not more noble or compassionate than the rest of us.

Above a few photos from a Saturday morning bike ride on the Mon River Trail. The milkweed is now in bloom, including butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), whose incandescent orange flowers are a beacon to many pollinators. Along the shady, moist banks of the trail, smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) and purple-flowered raspberry (Rubus odoratus) are at peak bloom, descending from the slopes in cascading tiers, often intermixed. And then there is the local wildlife, including on this late spring day a hefty common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina), likely a female looking for a spot to lay her eggs. I also rescued a juvenile version from the trail - a tiny (armored) tyke that posed a much lower risk to my fingers.

Air plants can be easily spotted in the parks and gardens in Rio de Janeiro. I particularly like this little Tillandsia stricta, which can be found on most tree trunks with rough and mossy bark.

Starry False Solomon's-Seal Maianthemum stellatum Asparagaceae

"Flowers are set in an un-branched cluster (raceme) at the tip of the flowering stem. Racemes are 1.5–5 cm long and 6–15-flowered. Flowers are set at one per node along the flowering stem, on stalks (pedicles) 6–12 mm long" (Wikipedia).

In contrast, the similar looking False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum racemosum) has "7 to 250 small flowers produced on a 10–15 cm panicle that has well-developed branches" (Wikipedia).
