The Mountain Valley

All of a sudden Gilbert caught the sound of distant footsteps and he whirled around to peer out into the horizon. It wasn’t long before he caught sight of a tremendously tall figure and his mind was immediately swamped with imaginings. Such a tall person could be a hermit sure, but they could also be some mythical troll or other beast in human form. That might have been a bit ridiculous of him. He wasn’t human himself after all. Still, he had been dropped off in an alternate universe. Anything was possible. 

At times like these, he wished he had a more developed sense of smell. Whatever it was had left a heavy scent because even his dulled nose could pick up the smell of smoke and blood. That didn’t bode well. Both his wings braced in preparation to fly should the need to retreat arise.  He was curious though and this was the only living thing aside from butterflies he’d seen. They might be his only chance at figuring out where he was. Tentatively, he held his ground as they approached.

When the figure did not move from its spot and simply stood there instead, Yigit continued to move forward, and gradually, the figure became clearer in his line of sight; however, it wasn’t hard to tell that said figure was non-human for that was what Yigit felt from its presence. Now this was not a bad thing, but he would not lower his guard. He had yet to determine if this non-human could be trusted, but as he closed in on the other, his footsteps slowed until he stopped just a few feet away.

Never before had he seen a human--or rather, something that looked like a human--have wings and then also the feet of a bird; even his scent--which pegged him as a male--was strange. He was certainly stranger looking than a dragon, but it was also interesting to an extent, so he decided to speak.

“I have been traveling along these mountains for years and yet I have never come across you,” Yigit said, eyes taking in everything that they possibly could about this ... bird human. “Or maybe you are not from here.”

“Okay, good bye-” He ran off quickly, back into the house, where the casserole was ready to take out and serve. While the kids ate, he covered his plate with a napkin and stripped all the beds. Leaving the sheets in the hamper, he returned to eat his dinner and clean up the rest, but Sharon came home (she wasn’t his mom, and made that clear; to him, she was Sharon). She didn’t like seeing that the sheets weren’t washed, and let him know what she thought about it.

She thought he was ungrateful and irresponsible to throw around the sheets as if he knew no better, and how could she trust him with all of this when the dishes weren’t even done because he was stuffing his face, how could he leave the house such a wreck as if it all meant nothing to him, and how dare he try to interrupt her! She thought it should all be done by nine, no more slacking (with the food he was eating slung right in the trash), or there would be consequences.

It was about ten when it was all done, with the sheets done first, starting with the youngest beds. Everyone’s was done by time he stopped. While they washed, he was with the dishes. It wasn’t anything new, and he knew she was stressed from work, that’s why she shouted at him, but only gently corrected the fifth time Jacob shoved a shark book in her face, or when Kaitlyn headbutted her mom in the chest while doing what was either snuggling or wrestling. They all watched a movie, which gave him time and space to get the work done, around Kim making popcorn and avoiding eye contact with him. They all looked so happy… he finished the task in the kitchen, away from them, not being able to tell you what movie they were watching, leaving his own bed unstripped and unwashed for the night, and his stomach empty. When everyone was going to bed, he left the house and returned to his sitting spot in the woods in the dark, walking at first, with a keychain LED light to point at the ground. Ivan had almost forgotten the thing that was lurking in the woods, and started to run when he started to feel upset, just to try to distract his body with doing something other than crying, until he hit what was basically a giant leathery wall, and was then sniveling in the dirt.

Though it may have seemed like a leathery wall for whichever reason, in all actuality, it was a fleshy, well-muscled chest which belonged to a certain, overly large individual who had hardly moved from the impact. Yigit was none too pleased with turn of events, and even though he smelled a somewhat familiar scent as well as what could only be salt, he did not need his nose to tell him that it was Ivan. His eyes could see quite well in the darkness of the night.

Ivan appeared to be upset for the salt was produced by tears which were shed when humans became overwhelmingly emotional. It wasn’t hi business, but it did not explain as to why he was here, now--in the dark no less where he could easily be preyed upon.

“Humans normally do not find me again once they have seen me once,” Yigit comments, staring down at Ivan coolly. “You are upset and have run into a dark forest at night full of predators.” If his well being did not matter to him at this time of night, then he was a fool. Humans were only slightly less fragile fully grown than they were as babies. “If you’ve come to escape, your choice was poor, as well.”

A Venture from Home.

Well, that was more standoffish than he’s used to, but no matter “I see, are we in your territory then? This inn has been here for the past 20 years and I thought I had contacted everyone in the area, my apologies for the oversight” he adjusted a cufflink “if you have any concerns about those here I assure you this is but a place to rest for those traveling through the area and a small community center of sorts for those who also call the swamps home.  This isn’t a town plant, it is simply seeing and filling a need in the cryptid community, nothing more” he hoped that would sait the strange man.  He could tell he was old, older than some master vampires he’s met, but what he wanted remained a bit of a mystery, as did why he suddenly showed up out of the blue looking like he thought the pups were going to try and bite his ankles

Yigit’s brows furrowed at that. Territory--no, he could never consider any of this his territory. None of it was where he had originally came from and he needed no new boundaries--he needed no new space to claim his own. If there was food, he would hunt there, simple as that. ”No--the only area I’ll defend is the immediate one around my home and no more.” There was no need to apologize. If they hadn’t crossed path, they hadn’t crossed paths. Glancing around the room more as Julien continued to speak, Yigit found that he simply could not lower his guard very much, but it did lower ... a little.

Even though none of them were humans--though Julien felt the strangest--that did not mean he trusted any of them immediately, but none of them--cryptids as they had been called?--had turned to attack him, so it counted for something. However, if they did turn on him at some point, he would be merciless. His curiosity had risen slightly though.

“Is there more to see--of this place?”

A Venture from Home.

As soon as he was in the door he was greeted with the sight of cryptids.  Werewolf pups were playing with a few centaur fawns in a play area just off of the large lobby while their parents watched and chatted.  A group of naga were by the large fireplace and other cryptids enjoyed the social centre of the hotel, getting to know each other and connecting with those both new and old in the area.  

A finely dressed man with bat wings, horns, and a rather fuzzy tail was happily chatting with the lady behind the front desk and he turned to him in greeting “Welcome to The Devil’s Lair, I am Julien, owner of this hotel, pub, and general meeting place for cryptids.  Are you new to the area, I don’t believe I’ve seen you before”

Upon seeing so many non-humans within the building, Yigit stopped short. No one immediately attacked him, but his guard rose even higher--more so than usual just due to how many of them there around. While no one had so much even glanced in his direction yet, that did not mean he had to be wide open to give them a chance to.

His guarded gaze snapped to his left when the male non-human behind the desk spoke to him all of a sudden, but it was then that he gained information that he honestly hadn’t had much interest in knowing; it was not something he needed to remember for this would most likely be his first and only time entering such a building.

The Devil’s Lair... No, it was not familiar at all.

“I have been living in this forest for a long while,” was all Yigit actually offered up as he assessed the non-human who had addressed him--Julien whom this place belonged to. Though he had wings similar to those of some that had belonged to his clan, it was immediately obvious that he was not a dragon because he did not feel like one; what the dragon was feeling though was a distinctly human side to this Julien, but it was mixed with something else--something foreign to even Yigit himself. “We have never crossed paths.”

“Oh, okay.” He was glad it wasn’t his stash that got burned, and thought that saying he didn’t find it was better than saying he did. Just in case. “I’m sorry it was in your… space.” There was awkward silence, and Ivan’s eyes trailed down to his dirty, worn, too-small, black canvas sneakers, poking gently into the fallen leaves and brush.

“Can… is it okay for me to go now? Do you need anything?” He was trying to save his skin by being a nice young man tromping around a wood around dusk, before he had to get home and run the dishwasher, and there was still that little bit of ironing to do with Tyler’s orchestra tux shirt… And, it was Wednesday, which is sheet night… God, he had to get home.

“Anything that smells like that deserves to be burned into there is nothing left,” Yigit replied, his eyes cutting into Ivan sharply, but honestly, he could care less as to what the human did with those pieces of grass as long as they stayed away from where he hunted; he honestly did not need his food smelling like that.

The dragon snorted at the meek question coming from the human and responded coolly. “Humans can give me nothing that I cannot obtain myself, but we have no business.” With that, he simply turned away, and in not so many words, Ivan was free to leave. He, too, needed to leave just as well; it was time to change the location of his home in the forest.

A small yellow butterfly fluttered down and landed gently on a pale cheek. Said cheek’s owner grumbled and reached up to wave it away while stirring from his slumber. After having had finished working on recession advice paperwork most of the day, he had collapsed onto his couch to get a much needed rest. Small fluttering insects were not going to take that from him. It took a moment for his sleep addled brain to realize that a butterfly being in his house did not make much sense however and his eyes fluttered open. As soon as he saw a clear blue sky instead of his living room ceiling, he sat up abruptly while looking around with wide eyes. Both of his wings flopped against the ground before pulling haphazardly against his back. He was in a meadow, and all around were imposing peaks that raised up towards the sky.

The cross over must have happened while he had been sleeping and he groaned while running a hand through his hair. Typically it was not hard to get back, but if it had happened while he was not really moving than that meant it was a specific time that he had to wait for in order to bridge the worlds this time. Those ones were always the worst. He hardly liked mountains either. The  seaside and woodlands had always been more favourable to him. Sighing heavily, he got to his feet. Hopefully he wasn’t too far from civilization but it was difficult to tell.

With a dead deer slung over his shoulders, claws wrapped around one pair of legs each to keep it from moving around too much instead of simply hanging on him, Yigit trudged along the somewhat uneven terrain which was apart of his usual path which led back to his home. On his arms and torso, there were some paper thin scratches which he had received  from a pack of wolves who clearly had not crossed paths with him before. While part of the pack had been killed mercilessly, another part had been devoured though the meat wasn’t fatty enough for his liking, and the remnants of the pack ran for their lives; the only reason those wolves which were running scared had been allowed to get away with their lives intact was because Yigit wanted to make sure he had room for the deer he had killed (which was why the wolves tried to take him on in the first place).

The wolves were the last thing on his mind though, and it wasn’t as though he wouldn’t heal from such minor injuries; the only thing he wanted to do currently was get home, bath, and prepare the deer to be eaten. 

As he continued to trudge forward, a figure in the several meters away caught his gaze, but he did not stop yet despite the fact that the figure gave off a feeling that felt quite different from how a human normally felt; the way to describe that as simply as possible was that human’s were “silent” and all others were not. The wind that blew just then was headed to the south of him, carrying the stench of death as well as the smell of charred wood.

I fell asleep working on replies last night and only managed to finish it early this morning. I still have more to go.

It was nice to know that their energy could be felt and perceived by others with magic. Especially someone’s whose own magic felt quite powerful from Saima’s point of view. They knew that their appearance could stand to be less human and started to let their eyes resume their true state and a slight fog to their breath release since they were in magical company.

Nothing wrong with letting up the disguise in some ways. “Stories - I’ve always been especially fond of them and in some ways, many stories are more real than folks would like to give them credit for being. I’ve told plenty of stories from what I’ve seen and been through over the years. They have such an underlying influence on how many perceive their cultures and sense of self - that this sense of lore is all too precious as far as I’m concerned.”

The fact that Saima had changed their appearance--well, they had allowed more of their true appearance to show rather than to continue to appear full human--had helped lessen Yigit’s overall annoyance by a fair amount which made it even easier to ignore at this point. The fog was interesting enough on its though. Perhaps there was a story behind that.

Yigit became even more attentive when Saima moved to speak again, thoughts of the fog pushed aside for the time being; as he listened though, it was clear that there was a note of the melodic sort within their voice that was ... somewhat interesting, but not enough that the dragon would actually comment upon it. However. when the blonde had wrapped up their end of the conversation, Yigit found himself nodding.

“Though I am not a storyteller, it is good that I have met someone like you who can also appreciate stories.”

A Venture from Home.

Yigit had been living on his lonesome for a long time now after he had given up the search for the remnants of his clan so few centuries ago, mostly focusing on keeping his mind sound and his reactions sharp in case he had to deal with any threats. Due to being seemingly so far out of the reach of humans, there had actually only been a few that had met their end by him recently, however, there was something he felt fairly curious about: he could feel a very sizable amount of energy that was somewhat far from his home. From the distance, it felt like one large mass, and he couldn’t pick out anything interesting being far away. At worst, it could involve humans, and if it did involve humans, he would need to see what was going on; their weapons had become stronger over the years after all. Perhaps it was time he actually ventured out to see what it was.

So, as soon as the early morning hit, and Yigit had eaten several pieces of melon in the morning and donned a dark cloak (which wrapped around his form and fastened on a golden button), he took flight from his home after he had cast a simple illusion to make the house appear and physically feel as though it was simply a cave. He kept to trees that had the most foliage and moved fast, speeding through the forest until the the mass of energy was much, much easier to feel which meant it was close by.

He paused then and touched down on the forest floor, still somewhat near the trees, but ahead of him, his gaze settled on a building of some sort, and honestly, the only buildings of humans he was familiar with were dwellings (homes) and markets (stores); it did not look like a regular human building though, especially with those markings (runes) that he did not understand. He had never seen such things from humans, and it was that reason which pushed him to walk towards the building. However, when he was in front of it, it was clear that he was entirely too tall in his hybrid form. This prompted him to shift into his more Human-like form and once he did, he walked--barefoot--into the strange place; his expression was guarded for the most part, but curiosity was leaking through just a bit.

Please note:

Significant changes have been made to Yigit’s height--they have been increased due to the fact that he is a larger than life creature in his True Form, so Yigit, too, will be massive in his smaller forms as a result. I thought that this made a lot more since and seeing as this is a WIP sideblog, I suppose this was bound to happen. More details will be ironed out and added to the blog as progress is made.

“I really am trying, I’m sorry, meester Yee-et.” The first sign of an accent was probably the lack of a true “mister”, but whether or not this beast chose to think of that was up in the air. There was an awkward silence, and Ivan felt that the nerves were rising too quickly to feel secure in stepping backwards, much less turning away. Isn’t that when the blood got spilled in horror movies?

The accent could be held back when he spoke very slowly , but being equally caught off-guard by this man-sized dragon-demon, whatever who spoke in riddles wasn’t helping him push away his early linguistic history from his babushka, before she died.

“Well, um.. I don’t know if you have, but have you seen a tin box with some weed and rolling papers in it around here, or any kids digging holes? I’m just supposed to see if it’s still here- someone at school asked me to.” He felt about to fall over at present, and simply hoped that he would leave either unscathed, or with a really cool scar. A cool one. Maybe like a slash-

Yigit tilted his head at the continued usage of those particular sounds in the human’s attempt to speak his name correctly. The first part of his name was fine, but it was the second part that he couldn’t seem to get the hang of, but that aside, this human in particular looked like one of those who were poorer. Humans with lots of gold--money or something of that nature wore flashier looking clothing, and flashy was not a word that could describe the state of the clothes right now--not that he cared much. It was an observation, but for now, he forcibly relaxed himself. 

In this day and age, it was actually more difficult to kill humans with so many of them around to see things, and he hardly relished it as much as he did in his early days. However, perhaps it was pitiful look of this one that was staying his hand unlike all the others that had been destroyed though that look shouldn’t have mattered--he had seen it countless times before... For now, he left things as they were in his mind for thinking on later. The annoyance was still there though--very much so--but he ... he would not kill this one.

“A box of weeds? Grass shavings? They smelled horrible and were near where I hunt so I burnt them.”

Scars

Though Yigit has taken a lot of human lives and he does not regret it, it is not as though the humans hadn’t attempted to fight back. During a particularly spirited fight in his hybrid form, he was received a gash on the left side of his face from a dagger that started at his cheek and stopped near his chin. It was only later that he found out that the dagger had been dipped in the blood of a dragon as rare as dragon blood is as well as the gash had scarred permanently.

Yigit tilted his head not unlike a bird at the explanation and though “Saima’s” very human appearance annoyed him on a certain level, it wasn’t as though he couldn’t sense that there was something different about Saima which he could not feel when compared to other, actual humans. Though Saima looked much more human than his own human-like form, the very presence of magical energy told him that the other was not human, and for that reason alone, Yigit supposed that he could deal with his appearance a bit better than usual.

...And it had honestly been a very, very long time since he had come into contact with another magical being that wasn’t Remnil or his own clan.

“I can feel it,” he finally spoke, facial expression relaxing and the harsh edge to his voice--which had accompanied his question--had gone. “Music isn’t something that I am intimately familiar with, but I do know what stories are--I remember them from when I was much younger. The Elders enjoyed telling them.” There was a curious light in Yigit’s mint green, though it had not softened very much overall.

Home, Location

At first glance, it appears that Yigit lives in a cave, and technically, if he wishes for that to be what his home looks like, that is exactly what it is. However, it is nothing more than a realistic illusion to further dissuade humans from approaching his space. In all actuality, his home appears to be man made and nice looking as he’s come to understand human life and human comforts well over the years though there are not as nearly as many things inside of the house as what humans surround themselves with such as electric devices, appliances, and the like. 

The common things you will find in his home are a variety of beds, sofas, and even a corner of large, soft pillows, a large bathing room (which is actually very practical and much easier than find a spring to wash up in (or a well hidden spot for other business), a large, cozy fireplace, and a cooking/kitchen area in which there are no plates, utensils, or things of that nature as magic can afford him what he needs (as long as he actually eats and rests himself). It is very simple in general and though most of the things in his home may be a bit bigger to adjust to his size, it is enough for himself in his opinion.

[His home can be easily adjusted, however, depending on the company. Note: the extent of his magical abilities is always something he is trying to improve, and it is through trial/error and experimentation that he has been able to come thus far--learning things that he is not sure that his own lost brethren ever knew about (such as the hybrid and human-like transformations).]

To say that Yigit was annoyed by the human that was standing several feel away from him--not a safe distance mind you, but a considerable distance nonetheless--was an utter understatement. He was absolutely livid due to the human’s mere presence--especially since even though he had somehow gotten him to reveal all of the information that the human now knew (magic, maybe?), he had yet to pronounce his name properly even once. Could his lips and tongue simply not form the syllables? 

His eyes narrowed in irritation, tail lashing out behind him to and fro not unlike an unhappy cat as he stayed in his crouched position; he would not pounce, yet and though he had killed hundreds of humans in all his adult years of living, it was no more than an outlet for his own loneliness. 

One clawed hand was pressed against the solid ground to carefully balance himself as he continued to stare without a word until he could not be silent anymore.

“My name is pronounced ‘Yee-it’, Human,” he stressed, a snarl on his lips which revealed some of his sharp teeth, and his tail slammed down upon the grass with a loud thump as though an attempt to express his frustration. It was not hard.
