Utica vs. New Paltz "Rekindling a long, lost love in Sports" 11/21/14

Despite my love for sports photography, I rarely managed to make the time to document a local game whether it was high school, college, or professional, due to my class schedule and lengthy part-time job that ate away at my weekends. As a result, a majority of games I attended rarely produced portfolio worthy material. Photographing the Utica College Pioneers and the New Paltz Hawks basketball match at the University of Rochester was a hefty reminder of how much more I needed to invest in what I love to do most in finding and capturing those decisive moments that define the qualities of sportsmanship, hard action and raw emotion.

Sports in general, whether its basketball, lacrosse, hockey, or both types of football, will always be a challenge to photograph due to it's highly unpredictable nature that can drive even the most sane men absolutely nuts. When I'm photographing any game, so many questions fill my head, where is the action? how should I frame it? how fast should I pan my camera? should I get the crowds response? are they responding?

When I think of situations such as this, I like to refer back to a quote by Henri Cartier Bresson, "Thinking should be done beforehand and afterwards, never while actually taking a photograph." When it comes to sports, I have an overwhelming tendency to do whatever it takes in my power to capture every noteworthy, photogenic moment that could make incredible photos. In reality, I'm no better than a neighbor's dog chasing random cars in the street. I lose my sense of focus and often will only capture one or two aspects of a game when there are multiple elements to consider; the moment of victory, the face of defeat, the essence of struggle, etc...

Though only a two-hour game, my time in photographing this event reminded me to make sacrifices when shooting my subjects. If you want strong action photography or dramatic close-ups, dedicate the time you need to find and capture those moments and budget your time by utilizing the stop clock. If you want to photograph the reaction of a coach to a foul or a crowds ecstatic response to a slam dunk, simply put your camera down, watch the game , and anticipate what will happen next. Often, I will forget to utilize these lessons to their full-potential and because of that, I don't always walk away with everything I want. However, the only way you can truly take advantage of whats in front of you is through experience and dedication to your craft and knowing when to choose your moments.
