3D Printing To better see why I'm in love with the idea of 3D printing, I'll write a little recap of where I'm coming from: I have always enjoyed making things, creating things, and I love the feeling of mastery when I have completed something that I am proud of. Growing up, I used our family computer and the program MS Paint to make designs, before I printed them, cut them out with scissors, and stapled, glued and taped the papers together, to make it into objects which I desired. I made miniature comics, board games, envelopes, paper boxes and A4 sized magazines. And I loved it. (I am sorry but I don't have any pictures to show any of my old creations for the time being.) I still have a love for miniature items:
When I started researching 3D printing, I fell in love with the concept! I can create stuff again, solid things, and with my own designs and my own ideas. I can mass produce an object, if I wanted to, instead of molding the same object again and again with clay. I can make miniature items that would take hours and hours to make several of, let's say a miniature table chair: I could produce 6 of the same chair, with the same details, without using wood, glue, or using hours and hours - working on it. I would only have to design something once - and that's it. And I would not have to go through the costs of making a mold for it. I could make how ever many different things I wanted, and the designs of these things would be unique - they would be MY designs. It's like the printer I used when growing up - I saw possibilities. I used the printer to "mass produce" comics and magazines. With a printer - I would not have to draw every single comic by hand - I made the design once - and then printed it how ever much I wanted to. And now, almost all grown up, there's a new printer out there, with new and exciting possibilities! Through this website, we can supposedly make, buy and sell 3D printed products: http://www.shapeways.com/ I feel like a child again! And this is something I really want to test out! I have in an earlier post also mentioned my rather naive approach to 3D printing, and I think it is worth looking at MJ's comments from that post. (click image to view a bigger version)
Yes, so we have always had different tools of creating, of being creative. Sticks, stone, clay and rope. Paper, scissors, glue and paint. It will always be like that - people have always created stuff. I might have gone a tad overboard in my excitement, I am not really trying to say that 3D printing will change everything. I don't really think it will. I just saw it as a new and fun tool of creating stuff. Like sewing my own pillowcases, I can now design my own plastic doll. Maybe 3D printing is a new part of the digital identity - where people feel the need to be different, to seek their own personal designs in everything - this is just a new little outlet for that. But then again, maybe it's more.
New rules might have to be set in motion to ensure that certain objects cannot be made with a 3D printer. But then again, HOW would anyone be able to know about what people print at home? We can print 'dangerous information' on a piece of paper, anywhere, any time. No one can stop us from printing information on a regular paper printer - so how can people stop others from printing weapons on a 3D printer? Then again, I don't think that 3D printers will make much difference to the commercial industry. The fact is that the 3D printer makes everything out of plastic - and I would not want all of my stuff to be plastic stuff. My cutlery, glasses, plates and bowls are all not made out of plastic. The clothing industry did not go under when people got sewing machines at home. Being able to make something at home, does not mean that we'll stop buying, stop being consumers. It think that whoever has enough free time to make something, and whoever has enough money to buy 3D printer, might make their own stuff, and maybe even sell these items that they make. (etsy?) I'm seeing it as a new tool of making stuff at home, as the new kind of sewing machine or paper printer. Some people will embrace it as a hobby, some people will not. 3D printing can however change the way factories produce their products. Maybe the biggest change we will see, is that machines will take over even more factory jobs.
Wikileaks - Ignite Talk
One of the assignments we got in Social Media Campaigning, was a group project: the ignite talk. We would have only 2 minutes to present a topic using slides. That means 30 seconds each, and approx 5 seconds per slide. My group got the subject of Wikileaks. We met as a group two times, and did the rest by our selves at home. The project of making a short presentation turned out to be, almost ironically, time consuming. It is worth noting that as soon as we grouped up, we made a group on facebook which we have been using actively ever since to share files and discuss our projects. Back to the ignite talk, we all started off by researching wikileaks in general, to get a better point of view of what we were dealing with. Then, we picked out four main parts to talk about, and distributed the four topics among us - one topic each. After putting together 5 slides each with suggestions to the topics, we met as a group (-1) in the NAB café and tried putting the slides together as a whole. We found holes, we were missing some points we should be talking about, and some of the topics where too similar. We revamped it - set more specific topics for each of us, and researched it again.
A week later, we all met at the BBC, where we worked on the slides for hours. Not only did the information on the slides have to make sense, the order, the timing and the design all had to match up as a whole. We practiced the presentation, and cut off all information that wasn't important enough to talk about; 5 seconds per slide does not add room for extra information. We had to keep it simple and to the point. Instead of showing the slideshow as a 'normal' slideshow - we set a timer to the Powerpoint file, so that it would automatically show 5 seconds per slide. Needless to say, there was no room for questions from the class, or messing up with saying too much about a topic - because that would effect the person talking after us - if we used too many seconds, the next person would have even less time to talk. My topic was the threats to the future of wikileaks. I was the one with the last slides for the ignite talk, and my last slide therefore contains questions to open up for a discussion after the presentation. These were my slides https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15407379/wikiMyTipic.pdf These are my notes for my slides: Slide 1: Julian has said that one of the biggest threats to the future of wikileaks is the United States and the laws they want to set in order. The new laws would mean the end of national security journalism in the United States. Slide 2: It would mean that if any journalist that publishes any part of a classified paper - would be a criminal - a spy - and the person who gave them the material - has committed the crime, communicating with the enemy. Slide 3: Anytime something is published - there is always a chance that the enemy can read it. Which means that any communication to a journalist, is communicating to the enemy. Sarah Palin has called Julan Assange a terrorist - and that he should be treated like one. Slide 4: Bradley Manning got access to information while he was serving for the military - he sent the information to wikileaks, and has today been in prison for 1000 days without a trial. People all over the world is protesting - calling him a hero "Blowing the whistle on war crimes is not a crime!" Slide 5: While all of this is scaring the general public from leaking information - information is still leaking. Julian Assange said that the internet is so massive, and so easy to access, that information from now on will find its way. With or without wikileaks. What is the future of wikileaks? Will it change the world? Has it all ready done so? - - - The entire presentation with all the four topics put together as one, is here: http://www.slideshare.net/mjneutel/wikileaks-the-hackers-game Through researching this topic, I did learn more about how free speech online can affect people badly. In war, where 'there are no rules' - almost anyone can be accused of being a spy. And when these people, in a war zone, can be accused of being a spy - a criminal - then their lives are at stake. The fact that war journalist has been murdered, simply for walking in the streets, and that the proof of the fact of it was hidden - is all chilling. It makes us think: How much information like this is still hidden? How many has been killed, simply for wanting to distribute information? And while the people who shared this information, ended up being 'the criminals' because they shared 'confidential information' that was 'not theirs to share', I can't help but wondering how much information like this is still hidden? People who does know about information like this, will more or less be too scared to share the information they got - because that would make them 'spies' and 'criminals' . Wikileaks has provided an output for people to distribute information while still being anonymous. The electrical traces are all deleted, and therefore there are no 'criminals' behind the files that are shared through wikileaks. But yet, Bradley Manning got caught - simply because he told one other person that he had shared some confidential files. If he had kept quiet, would he then still have been a free man, even thought he shared the files? Apparently so. Manning has turned into a scape goat - an example of what 'not to do' - and because they have proof that he shared files, he is being used to scare any potential sharer of information; scare them into not sharing what they know. Through this project, I have gotten better knowledge of what sites like wikileaks really is, how it is effecting people, and how it is effecting companies. I've also learned that putting together a short slide as a group, is time consuming and challenging. But we were all happy when the presentation was over - a job well done!
Commenting on tumblr
So it was really a shame that I couldn't enable commenting to my tumblr! I thought I was overlooking something, so I googled it. Turns out, you CAN'T comment on Tumblr. You can only 'like' and 'reblog' or share to other sites.
Different blogs all suggested the same answer to my problem: adding a third party site and embed it to my tumblr. http://disqus.com/ Now, my tumblr blog is commentable! (Yes. I made a new word. I'm that exited. Or not.)
I tried Mozilla Popcorn out. Took one of my favorite sketches from YouTube and tried to play around with it using Popcorn. Here's the problems I faced: - I could not figure out how to add a map or a picture, or anything, to the area outside of the video frame - as I have seen in a demo; it should work fine. - When saving the project, and trying to review it in a new window, the video wont render with the added elements to the correct times: it all gets mixed up and wont work properly. - I tried adding the video to tumblr as a video file, using the link or the embed transcript: none of them worked. It does have potential: - Images and other objects can link to a different site. - flickr and twitter can be set on "live" - and will therefore render different information to whoever is watching. - you can stop the video and still play around with the elements that popped up: google maps, wikipedia, twitter, flickr. I do not know if Mozilla Popcorn is just under maintenance right now, or if my laptop has simply been on for too long. But if the problems I faced are here to stay, then Mozilla Popcorn needs to get better before it can truly be used in creative ways: timing is everything, and if that does not work in the finished project, then I'd rather not use it.

Searching the web for news about 3D printing, it starts occurring to me that this is a handy gadget that the rich can play with nowadays. And I would love to be one of them! I have loved miniature... everything! Ever since I was a little girl: I never grew up from it. And having the possibility to CREATE my own miniature furniture, lamps, dolls, and whatnot? I WOULD LOVE THAT. Growing up, me and my friend Anne made miniature magazines, comics and boardgames using MS Paint and a printer, todays kids can create their own dollhouse interior or miniature shop with all the items they wish for, with a 3D printer. ....did I say that I want one? Check out the link! What would you do with a 3D printer if you had one? What would we be able to do if we could build a gigantic 3D printer? And use something else than plastic? Could we build houses with them? WHAT DOES THE FUTURE BRING?
