The Maranaos are superstitious. They believe in the hidden powers of the ANTING-ANTING amulets. These Items which they wear on their necks, arms or legs believed to bring them good luck.
Courting a Maranao lady could be difficult. A suitor should be the most hardworking and patient bachelor in town. A go-between who will mediate for the contracting parties of the groom needed. The parents of the groom contact the parents of the bride regarding the desire of their son marry. The woman's family announces the dowry. When all is settled, the wedding celebration takes place In fun and merriment.
The Maranaos are the biggest group of Muslims living in the region. They are dwellers of lake Lanao.
THEIR MATERIAL CULTURE ABOUT THEIR CLOTHES
Maranao women wear special kinds of clothes which are distinctly their own. The malong is one kind of dress material which can be used in many ways. Women wear it as skirt, a dress, a blouse or a gown. The rest of the family use it either as hammock, a fruit basket, a sleeping bag, a bathrobe, a baby carriage or a simple market bag.
A symbol of good fortune among the Maranao, the largest Muslim group in the country, it is depicted as a fowl with long and colorful wings and tail with a fish hanging on its beak. It is a cultural icon not just among the Maranao people but a treasure to Philippine culture.

The native Maranao have a fascinating culture that revolves around kulintang music, a specific type of gong music, found among both Muslim and non-Muslim groups of the Southern Philippines. Biyula is another Instrument for the Maranao people to use, Biyula is a string instrument. In 2005, the Darangen Epic of the Maranao people of Lake Lanao was selected by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Exquisite Maranao cuisine and hospitality are palpable.[8] They are known of having a spicy taste in their foods. A condiment made of traditionally cultivated spices, locally known as Palapa (Bontang, native product in Gandamatu) is one of their distinguished cuisine symbol.[9] It is made of stewed scallion bulbs or “sakurab” in Maranao. The thinly sliced scallion bulbs and ginger are caramelized by slow cooking and mixed with chillies and little coconut oil.[10]
Maranao recipes are so rich that it talks about life itself! Suffice it to say that the recipes are intertwined with the life cycle rites and rituals of all aspects of Maranao society and culture: from birth to death. In other words, food cannot be separated with daily life activities because food is life itself![11]
