The Witch Hunt for Nipples “Nipples, nipples, too many nipples.” The remark was by a man who frequently visits our shop. He was flipping through the pages of The Collected Works of Pierre Louys, illustrated by Harry G. Spanner. He has always struck me as being of questionable moral character, considering the nature of some of the books he has sought to purchase. (The man, I mean, not Harry G. Spanner.) I try to overlook his faults, however, as I’ve learned that one should not be judgmental. Judging is someone else’s job. “Do you know that people once believed that you could identify witches by counting their nipples?” “Yes, I am aware,” I said, and I prepared myself for one of those awkward conversations in which a person who knows a little about a subject tries to enlighten someone who knows a great deal. He did not, however, seem to be interested in witchcraft as such. “You’re on Tumblr, right?” I realized that he was referring to my blog. Yes, I said. “No more nipples allowed on Tumblr,” he said. “Unless they’re male nipples, which apparently are not infused with the insidious power to destroy civilizations.” He opened the book to one of the illustrations and set it down on the counter. “Here’s the thing. I get that Tumblr is a private company, so it’s not a question of censorship, per se. Their platform, their rules. But the new rules… it’s just hard to understand why they’ve chosen to draw the lines where they did. It’s not just Tumblr. It’s society in general. I wonder if we’re really all that far away from the days of Matthew Hopkins. We tell ourselves that we’ve stopped believing in witches, and we don’t look for a tell-tale third nipple as proof. But we still act as if women’s nipples have the magical power to bewitch us all and drag us to ruin.” He walked away, leaving the book open. I left it there, courting disaster.
