‘Cool and Calm’ Photography with @maria.svarbova

Slovakian photographer Maria Svarbova’s (@maria.svarbova) work focuses on the loneliness and isolation of modern life. “My images have something almost theatrical about them,” says Maria, who studied archaeology before turning to photography. “It’s as if the figures have slowed down their movement, and there is no frivolity in them at all. There is no emotion, no individuality in their stillness.”

Maria’s swimming pool series has been her most continuous body of work since she began taking photos professionally, and it has largely helped her to develop her style. “The sterility and beautiful geometry of these old swimming pools, which were mostly built in the communist era, set the tone for my photography,” says Maria. “I got my first spark of inspiration from my local pool, which is set in an 80-year-old building with dramatic architecture.” In these stark, retro-yet-futuristic images, “everything seems to be frozen — the swimmers are cool and calm, like the tiles of the pool.”
