CyberSpaceLand brings narrative and physical performance to VJing, with visuals drawn from text results of Google searches designed to elicit personal responses in the public space of the internet. Loose narratives evolve as the performance progresses, though like song lyrics, audiences need not make out every word. The software is designed as a visual instrument; Übergeek uses various gadgets to perform the shapes, colors, and textures of the visuals through hand and foot movements. There are some chaotic properties built into the software, so that Übergeek doesn’t know exactly what it’s going to do when she pokes at it in a particular way – but she has a sense of it. As with the Internet itself, performance is a combination of chaos and control.

'Roadkill Cat Rug' consists of headlines and quotations taken from human-interest stories from the website of the daily centre-right newspaper the New Zealand Herald.

The original articles utilized were generally sourced from overseas news services rather than written by New Zealand Herald journalists and featured cat-killers, celebrity cats, cat theatres, cat-politicians, surfing cats, even Larry the unloved cat belonging to the current Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Here the ubiquitous cat-video is stripped back until it exists only as phrases, becoming dead-pan and revealing the banality and absurdity beneath the click-bait.

This extended poetry cycle is based on a legal decision, at the end of the eighteenth century, related to the murder of Africans on board a slave ship.

In 1781 the captain of the slave ship, Zong, murders, by drowning, one hundred and fifty Africans so as to collect insurance monies. Through fragments of voices, shreds of memory and shards of silence, Zong! unravels the story that can only be told by not telling.

We are used to decoding the visual display of quantitative information. The use of data graphics in newspapers, transport network maps, science textbooks, and many other contexts is commonplace and facilitates our understanding and interpretation of complex data. Edward Tufte notes that ‘graphics are instruments for reasoning about quantitative information’. A map of Japan showing population densities is clear because there is a caption and key that explains what is largely self-evident in the map: colour shows the density of a parameter in relation to a bounded geographic space, and the key presents the specific context. We understand the map as an established construct that represents something in the real world, and use this as a starting point for understanding the mapping. But it is artificial and subject to its creator’s aesthetic priorities....

The exhibition takes as its starting point declassified and other sensitive U.S. government documents concerning the global War on Terror that followed the events of September 11, 2001, as well as the United States military operations in Afghanistan an Iraq. Holzer’s paintings are drawn from memoranda, planning maps, diplomatic communiqués, interrogation records, autopsy reports, and the handwritten cri de coer of detainees themselves – which prior to release to the public, the censor heavily redacted. Solmaz Sharif’s astonishing first book, Look, asks us to see the ongoing costs of war as the unbearable loss of human lives and also the insidious abuses against our everyday speech. In this virtuosic array of poems, lists, shards, and sequences, Sharif assembles her family’s and her own fragmented narratives in the aftermath of warfare. Those repercussions echo into the present day, in the grief for those killed in America’s invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, and in the discrimination endured at the checkpoints of daily encounter.

I received an email telling me it was over. I didn’t know how to respond. It was almost as if it hadn’t been meant for me. It ended with the words, “Take care of yourself.” And so I did. I asked 107 women (including two made from wood and one with feathers), chosen for their profession or skills, to interpret this letter. To analyze it, comment on it, dance it, sing it. Dissect it. Exhaust it. Understand it for me. Answer for me. It was a way of taking the time to break up. A way of taking care of myself.

“I compiled a selection of film clips that resonate with the concept of voice, and invited four deaf friends to provide sound captions of what they feel could be added to the films. For non-hearing audiences, in much the same way that spoken conversation is mediated by sign language interpreters, the experience of watching a film is largely dependent on the way in which it is captioned. The multidimensionality of sound, or many layered sounds, are often reduced to brief captions. The captioner chooses which sounds to reference and which to leave out. In Close Readings, the sound captions range from literal to conceptual, imagined or even poetic.”
