Job 10, Week 10

1. God is both the creator and the punisher. Although he created Job and gave him everything he’s ever had (”You have granted me life and steadfast love, and your care has preserved my spirit”), Job still acknowledges that God can take that away from him. If he (Job) sins, he knows God will punish him. 

2. Job is questioning God. “Do not condemn me; let me know why you contend against me.” He’s no longer just taking this punishment because he knows God is always right. It’s sad that Job is saying that he wishes he’d never been born. That he’s been punished so badly that he’s begging for God to leave him alone and let him die in peace. But he’s never questioned God’s existence or sovereignty. In a way, it seems kind of like Jesus’ story. When he’s praying to God to take the yoke from him, but God’s will be done and not his. 

3. I feel like the lesson here is still that there is purpose in the problem or pain. Job is still searching for why this is happening to him, just like we would if we were tested. But I think another lesson is to persist through the pain and tribulations. Where Job is asking God to leave him alone, we should probably ask God for the strength to carry on and learn from what he’s teaching us.

1. God is the creator. While maybe not really the point of this passage, Job clearly says that he’s the one who made all things, who “stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves.” He is mighty and just. But he’s not a man, and we can’t hold him to the standards of men. As if we could hold him to anything. 

2. Job knows he’s right. He knows he’s blameless. Yet he knows that when faced with God, he cannot be “right” because God is right. God cannot be wrong. Whatever Job did to deserve this, he knows God would bring it out. Like Pastor Byung was saying today, it still seems to be a case of the despairing “Why me?” rather than it being that Job was such a good follower of God that God allowed him to be tested. 

3. While misinformed, the phrase “God will destroy both the blameless and the wicked” rings true to me. Especially after today. Even if we are good people by today’s standards, we’re still sinners. God isn’t blindsided by our sin; he loves us in spite of it. Our sin and its consequences (whether brought by God or not) will contribute to what and who we become. God knows and he is not surprised. But he still loves us and is shaping us to be who he wills us to be.

Job 8, Week 8

1. God is the righteous one. “God will not reject a blameless man, nor take the hand of evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouting.” God is the one with the plan. He is also merciful. Bildad tells job that if he seeks God and pleads for mercy, then surely God will restore him. 

2. Bildad is gently rebuking Job in this, again reminding him of something he should know. God is the great I am. He doesn’t change. He didn’t suddenly turn on Job for something undeserving. He punishes those who deserve it and holds in his hands those who are faithful. “If your children have sinned against him, he has delivered them into the hand of their transgression.” We don’t really get a view of what the children did or didn’t deserve, but this is the truth. While Job most likely hates that his children had to die, it had to happen for God’s plan for his life to be fulfilled. 

3. We can bank on God always being God. He won’t change. He’ll always be the righteous and merciful God that the Bible says he is. That being said, God is also wrathful and will punish those who deserve it. It seems like when we have something in our lives that causes us to ask “Why are you doing this to me God” it’s better to self-reflect and see what we may have done that is deserving of punishment or hardship or to try and discover what we should be learning from a situation.

Job 7, Week 7

1. God is the “watcher of mankind.” God’s eyes are always on us, whether that is to test us or protect us, he sees everything we do. Job sees God as the one who is inflicting the pain and strife upon his life. 

2. At this point, Job is really complaining. Not a whiny sort of complaining, but actually voicing his self-loathing and how truly awful he feels. He’s finally asking God why this is happening to him and not just saying “I’ve done something to deserve this.” But he doesn’t question God’s existence or sovereignty. He’s only question why it feels like he’s being punished so harshly and what it could possibly be for. 

3. Even the most faithful servant of God will question him sometimes. They’ll question his path for their life or what the cause of their tests/punishments are. But my friend once told me that she almost doesn’t trust Christians who never or have never questioned God, because it’s almost like they’re not really actively trying to have a relationship with him. Or they’re not really thinking about the ramifications, for lack of a better phrase.

1. In this Chapter, Job says that God is the one who has inflicted this punishment on him. “For the arrows of the Almighty one in me” and “the terrors of God are annoyed against me.” But at the same time, God is also a teacher. Even in the time of strife, Job asks God to show him what he’s done. To teach him what he’s committed. 

2. I find it interesting that he’s suffering so much that “his hope” is God to crush him, or to release him from his (God’s) grasp. Yet at the same time is still willing to accept teachings. He knows he has done nothing “I would even exult in pain unsparing, for i Have not denied the words of the Holy One” yet he is still asking God to “Teach me, and I will be silent; make me understand how I have gone astray”

3. Even if we know we are right, maybe we aren’t. This is applicable in all spaces, but especially in cases where we find ourselves in a position where God is saying “you’re wrong.” God is the way, the truth, and the life. His word is law. No matter how much we learn or how much wisdom we accrue we can always learn from God and be humbled by him. Not necessarily in that order.

Week 6: Job 6

1. God is the one Job is seeking after for relief/release. Even in this sense, in this sorrow, God is peace. God isn't just peace when there is active hardship and struggles, but also when there is just sorrow, when the situation is so hopeless.

2. "What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that I should be patient? Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze?"(Job 6:11‭-‬12). In these verses, it really shows that Job didn't take this suffering lightly because of his faith in God. Regardless of Job's righteousness and trust in God, Job was despaired and exhausted at his difficult life. I feel like it shows that I don't need to suck it up and ignore the pain that comes with growth. I feel like the Korean church is a little masochistic in that it teaches people to rejoice, seek, and even enjoy suffering. There's a difference from accepting hardship and minimizing it.

3. Job and his friends are so confusing. In chapter 6, Job ends his response in saying that true friends don't shy from the truth and that his friends were saying empty words and not seriously considering Job's anguish. I thought what Eliphaz said was pretty spot on. I wonder if Job is being prideful by implying he did nothing wrong, or if the friends are prideful in thinking they know best of the situation. Either way, it's v admirable for Job to ask for not-sugar-coated truth for this own integrity. I gotta do that more often....

1. In part of the passage, God is a marvelous God who has designed the world so carefully. He is also a God who not only judges but punishes. In a way, God is also an avenger, defending justice. He is able to see through the BS. God puts us through hardship and delivers us from the same hardship.

2. This passage was one of the hardest to connect emotionally. It may be because I’m getting lazy. Verse 22 “At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the beasts of the earth” was the most encouraging. More than being at peace during moments of destruction and famine, Job’s friend encourages us by saying I will laugh. That’s what my faith will do for me (even though I’m not there yet).

3. Verse 18 “ For he wounds, but he binds up; he shatters, but his hands heal” is something I need to continually do throughout this book of Job but during my separate devotionals. When I feel offended or get defensive, it’s my pride being shattered and wounded. Although it’s wounded, I need to keep working on making sure it’s bound afterwards. I can’t get discouraged when I’m being humbled and shattered. God isn’t stopping there and neither should I.

Job 5

1. God appears to be the same as what I said for Job 4. he’s a provider, but he’s also wrathful. He’s powerful and just. He protects his followers and gives them hope. He’s the one we should be devoted to and follow earnestly. 

2. Maybe I’m interpreting wrong, but verse one I thought was very impactful, “Call now; is there anyone who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?” Eliphaz is asking what other god or deity Job might turn to in this time of need. Implicitly, he’s asking “will you turn away from God? Is any one of these others even a fraction of what (y)our God is?” And the answer he gives to Job, at least for himself, is no. He is committed to God because God is everything listed in point 1. and more. 

3. We shouldn’t turn away from God, even in the face of punishment or tests. God “wounds, but he binds up; he shatters, but his hands heal.” Any test or pain he puts us through has a purpose. It might break pieces of us or break us entirely, but his hands heal. His hands are forming us more into the image of him, and who we’re meant to be. I know I’ve been talking about the same lesson in basically every chapter, but I feel like Job is probably one of if not the best example of there being purpose in the pain, at least thus far.

Week 4: Job 4

1. God is presented as the traits Job embodies to men. But he’s also embodied in verse 7-9. God is a  powerful and just God, but he is also wrathful. He’s also shown as a provider in verses 10-11. Even “the King of the jungle” is nothing without prey given from God. 

2. The thing that moves me the most is that 1) it seems like Job is suffering from impostor syndrome, and 2) his friend is encouraging him through it with facts he knows already. 1)I feel like first few verses portray Job as an inspiring individual, worthy of praise/honor. But he’s discouraged because it seems he’s being punished when all he did was his best to follow and honor God. So while I relate a lot to having impostor syndrome, I relate specifically to this situation because it’s like this: I’m doing things I should- I got to church, I pray, I read the Bible, I serve at church, etc. But at the same time, I still question if I’m truly following Jesus or if I’m just playing a part. A part that could at any moment be broken/uncovered. Then with his friend, I feel like that’s a way that I try to encourage people/ hope they encourage me. Because if it’s something I know already, I feel like I’m more likely to listen because I’m like “oh, I remember that!” versus someone else telling me an idea I don’t believe. 

3. I think the biggest lesson is not to be discouraged in the face of punishment/test, even though it’s easy to do. As long as we are firm in the Lord and living according to his plan, we -should-be okay. The pain has a purpose.

Week 4: Job 4

1.  God is depicted in the way that Eliphaz perceives God. (I had to re-read the passage through The Message version.) God is a mighty God in this passage: “By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.” (verse 9). God is also just, meaning that innocent will never be tried falsely (verse 7) and sinners won’t be let off (verses 17-20).

2. I can’t tell if Eliphaz is being slightly sarcastic or not, but if Eliphaz is being genuine, then he’s doing a very good job in encouraging Job. It sounds like Eliphaz is saying all the right things. Reminding Job of what kind of life he lived as well as the kind of God that they live under, a God who is righteous and holy.

3. As Eliphaz is claiming about Job’s life/past, I think my life should also be exemplary. Not so that I can boast, but so that I can confidently say that I really did try my hardest in following after Christ. I know that, regardless, I will stand in front of God as a sinner and be ashamed of my deeds, but I want to be able to declare that I love and fear God.
