Elio sighed, wondering if he had made a mistake with Elena when he granted her a second life as a deity. The life of a deity was certainly wasnât a walk in the park, and the adjustment phase was rougher for some than others.
âElena⊠I will stay. I will be here and am not going anywhere, I assure you,â he responded calmly, the feeling of a warm hand on Elenaâs shoulder gracing the younger deity as she was out of armâs range for Elio to do so directly. âI know that may not be enough for you or what you hoped to hear, but itâs the truth.
âOur path is not an easy one to walk. Even those that want to stay will eventually leave you simply due to the passing of time and the fragility that is life. You learn over time that your interactions with those around you will ebb and flow like waves on the ocean, and to cherish them for what they were, not what they could have been.
âI donât blame you for needing time. Just remember youâre not alone- please. And donât leave me to hunt you down next time to remind you of that? I wonât be mad. I would rather know what youâre up to, so I can help you.â
Elena was quiet for a moment after he finished speaking. His reassurance settled over her like a blanket meant to warm but somehow only made the weight on her chest heavier. She could feel the touch against her shoulder, but beneath it there was something else. Doubt. It settled inside her like a stone. Because if it wasn't her logic he was unsure aboutâthen it was her. She stared down at her hands instead of at him, her fingers still loosely intertwined where they rested against the counter. âThatâs⊠not what I meant,â she tried at last, softly.
"I didnât mean someone who wonât leave.â A faint shake of her head followed. âI'm not naive. I know no one can promise that.â Her hands tightened again before slowly relaxing. âI meant someone who wants to stay. Someone who values their own life enough to try.â Her voice remained calm, but the quiet strain in it was difficult to miss. âSomeone who doesnât look at self-sacrifice like itâs the most natural solution to a problem.â
A small pause followed. âI know people die. I know things end.â Her eyes flicked toward the laughing group in the booth again before returning to the counter. âThatâs not the part that scares me.â
What scared her was how easily some people seemed willing to disappear.
âYou say youâll stay,â she continued, still gentle, âbut we both know you would sacrifice yourself for the greater good in a heartbeat. And maybe that's what we're meant to do. Maybe that's what it means to be a deity." She hesitated, searching briefly for the right words. âBut I canât build my life around a promise that depends on the world never giving you a reason to break it. Because if it does⊠I will be left with nothing.â The words werenât bitter. If anything, she sounded tired.
âThatâs why I said thisâ," Elenaâs gaze flicked toward the demon lingering at the bar, now aware of him again after Elio had scared him off, "âis temporary.â She drew in a small breath. âIâm not giving up on people. Iâm just⊠taking a step back from the part where I make them the center of my world.â Finally her gaze lifted to him fully. âItâs safer if I donât depend on anyone that much. At least not until I've gotten a better handle on this.â
Her expression softened slightly then, though something in it had closed off all the same. âIâm just trying to make sure that if the worst happens again, it hurts⊠but that's all it does.â
