I had an elderly black gentleman for a patient the other night. He was described as unfriendly and morosed during the report. When I entered his room, I addressed him as Sir and called Mr. Williams (pseudonym). He gave me the broadest smile and when I asked him why he is so happy. He said it's the first time that someone actually called him by his name. He told me the staff has been calling him 'buddy' and he hates it because he is not their buddy. Calling him 'buddy' takes him back to the time when white people would call him 'boy'. And here I thought that cultural competency was part of our annual competencies.
