She remembered the years before, when they were fifteen and would hold hands while running after the bus and the flutter in her heart was not because of the effort. She remembered the sleepovers when she’d wake up nestled in Ashara’s arms gods knew how and her face would flush. 

Elia remembered how Oberyn never made a move on Ashara, and how she cried herself to sleep one night because there was no way her best friend could love her back in that way. Because she was too pretty, and all the boys loved her, and she was her friend, and saying anything would fuck everything up. Elia didn’t have many friends.

She remembered how she rushed things with Rhaegar hoping that it would pass, and how they didn’t see each other that much afterwards and how Ashara would act weird when he was around. 

That’s all she thought about, when Ash told her she loved her – now that they were older, and Elia had two children and divorce papers on the making, and her best friend was always at home because she had spent days crying or wanting to break things or being too sick to get up –

“Me too. I always loved you.”

Elia, dying in the cruelest of ways, never to come back to her home where Ashara waited to serve. Her daughter, lying still in her arms, never getting the chance to live and love the world like her mother once had. There was no point in moving on anymore. There was nothing left. Nothing except the stars above and the sea below.

Ashara’s eyes are closed, but she can hear the laughter and the cries of the children playing nearby, she can hear the splashes of water as it pours from the fountain, she can hear the steady rhythm of Elia breathing. Ashara opens her eyes and looks at Elia, the sun shines down making her brown hair appear as shining bronze as it softly blows from a draft of cool wind. “I love you, Elia,” Ashara whispers, and she hears Elia’s breathing hitch.
