SAM SPRUELL as prince Maekar Targaryen A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS 1x06
— A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS // 1.06 "The Morrow"
I'm not a fan of Egg sneaking away from Maekar and all the implications this has. I understand that show Maekar might need more time to let go of his "last son", but I don't want Egg to carry a big lie everywhere he goes like Dunk does, and I don't like seeing an Egg who has learned nothing and lies to Dunk and puts him in danger so soon after he almost got him killed.
(I know show Egg is a big liar, see the addition of "I wasn't spying on you" in ep. 6. I'm just saying I'm not a big fan of it.)
I feel like this is such an unnecessary change in an otherwise fantastic and very faithful adaptation, and for what? Just for that final post-credit joke?
They say in a BTS featurette that in the books it's ambiguous whether Egg got permission from Maekar, but that's only ambiguous in the first novella. In the second and third one it's never implied Egg sneaked away, actually the opposite. Egg has his father's ring, his instructions given as he sent him away, and his blessing. Bloodraven later mentions Maekar sending Egg away too.
I feel like they focused more on having a final comedic punchline à la "Home Alone" ("where the f*ck is Aegon???") than on the repercussions that this joke causes on Maekar's and Egg's characterisations, and on future plot points like Egg having Maekar's ring, which now I guess he just stole in show canon.
I wasn't worried for season 2 but ngl this unnecessary big change makes me worry. And it makes me sad because they've shown they are capable of amazing original scenes like the one with Maekar and Egg in Aerion's room in ep. 6, scenes that enrich the original text but don't change things drastically.
There's some hope: they said they're going to address it and deal with it, though at the same time Maekar's actor said he's not in season 2, so I wonder how. I just hope the resolution is satisfactory. After all, GRRM said that episode 6 is his favorite, and hopefully he had seen the post-credit scene too when he made that statement and knows their plans for it.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms + in memoriam: Baelor 'Breakspear' Targaryen
“I remember, Sam. I still remember.” He was not making sense. “Remember what?” “Dragons,” Aemon whispered. “The grief and glory of my House, they were.”
I don't care to die today. It may be that I've killed you with my lie. And if so, I'm sorry. I'm doomed to some kind of hell, I know. Likely one without wine.

✨A lady, like in the songs✨
"the gown itself was ivory samite and cloth-of-silver, and lined with silvery satin. The points of the long dagged sleeves almost touched the ground when she lowered her arms... the bodice was slashed in front almost to her belly, the deep vee covered over with a panel of ornate Myrish lace in dove-grey" // A Storm of Swords, 382
(minus the dagged sleeves, this Sansa outfit felt very 1400s burgundian so the muse truly struck me)

A Storm of Swords, Chapter 38, Tyrion V.
"The Fat Flower thrust him into tourneys at too tender an age, just as he did the other two. He wanted another Leo Longthorn, and made himself a cripple."
It's only been one episode but the Dunk and Egg show gives me the same warm and bittersweet feelings as some of Brienne's chapters in AFFC, with the right kind of innocence and cosiness from the characters of Dunk and Egg that feels like something out of LOTR. I love it a lot.
