“Anastasia, the youngest daughter, destined to become the most famous of the children of Nicholas II, was a short, dumpy, blue-eyed child renowned in her family chiefly as a wag. When the saluting cannon on the Imperial yacht fired at sunset, Anastasia liked to retreat into a corner, stick her fingers into her ears, widen her eyes and loll her tongue in mock terror. Witty and vivacious, Anastasia also had a streak of stubbornness, mischief and impertinence. The same gift of foreign languages also equipped her admirably as a mimic. Comically, sometimes cuttingly, the little girl aped precisely the speech and mannerisms of those about her.
Anastasia, the enfant terrible, was also a tomboy. She climbed trees to dizzying heights, refusing to come down until specifically commanded by her father. She rarely cried. Her aunt and godmother, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, remembered that she slapped the child. The little girl’s face went crimson, but instead of crying, she ran out of the room without uttering a sound. Sometimes Anastasia’s practical jokes got out of hand. Once in a snowball fight, she rolled a rock into a snowball and threw it at Tatiana. The missile hit Tatiana in the face and knocked her, stunned to the ground. Truly frightened at last, Anastasia broke down and cried.”

Those British and German cards are great for collecting because they tend to be less expensive than the Russian editions.

18 June 1901 - Birth of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna DAUGHTER IS BORN TO THE WIFE OF THE CZAR Nicholas Subjected to Another Disappointment in his Desire for a Male Heir to the Throne. ST PETERSBURG, June 18 - The czarina gave birth to a daughter today. Thus the fourth hopes of Russia’s royal couple, as well as those of the entire nation for a male heir to the throne have been raised to the highest pitch only to be dashed to the ground. The czar’s anxiety as to the sex of the child born today has surpassed that of any previous occasion. He has consulted many eminent doctors as to the best means of governing the sex, but his efforts have been proved futile. The previous children born are: Grand Duchess Olga, 1895; Grand Duchess Tatiana, 1897; and Grand Duchess Marie, 1899. The child will be named Anastasia. DISAPPOINTMENT IN RUSSIA Birth of Daughter Instead of a Son to the Czar Upsets Many Calculations–Czarina Doing Well. ST PETERSBURG, JUNE 19 - There is general disappointment at the fact that another daughter, instead of a son, has been added to the Czar’s family. Many private and other calculations have thereby been upset. The politicians anticipated amnesties, decorations, reforms, and society fetes, and the taxpayers were looking forward to the remission of important State taxes. The Czar signaled the birth of his daughter by issuing a ukase commuting the punishment of the riotous students. Some of them are exempted from further military service, and others are credited with their period of punishment as part of their regular military service. Prof. Ott’s bulletin says the condition of the Czarina and her child is entirely satisfactory.
