“pull yourself up by your bootstraps”, “blood is thicker than water”, and “everything happens for a reason”. The first two because the original contexts/intentions for them are the exact opposite of how the phrases are actually used today, the third one because it’s always used as some kind of excuse to not intervene in a tragedy or provide this hollow comfort to people in times of mourning.
