It was getting harder to do this. Harder to watch him slip away. Every day felt like another abandonment, another slap in the face yet she still stayed. She still harboured a tiny flicker of hope that one day he would listen to her. She’d heard what her friends had to say, what her family tried to hammer home and it was starting to get harder to remember the good days. The afternoons spent surrounded by laughter and playful banter. They were slowly being swallowed up by anger and hatred, moments where she questioned whether or not all of this had been a dream.

Isobel started at the featherlight touch. It had been a long time since Elijah had done anything gentle that the barest brush of fingers had her on edge. Her gaze met his, as a sigh whooshed from her lips. “Then tell me what happened. Tell me anything. I can’t deal with the silence anymore.”

"Too much damage has been done," was all he replied simply. All he was doing now was smearing the red paint on his fingers on parts of her skin. His canvas wasn't a masterpiece, she was a mess. Elijah had created a mess out of her, their situation, everything. He felt so bad, but at the same time he felt like that was what was necessary. She needed to stay at arm's length. Isobel needed to hate him. Yet she didn't.

This would be so much easier if she would just hate him. In Eli's mind, all she needed to do was admit her sins and then all would be fine. She'd stop faking and he'd stop hurting her. In that situation, they would grow apart and then she would just want to leave, so he'd send her away with terrible reviews and more baggage than she needed. Isobel would have to be a slave forever or whore her way out, but both seemed like fair treatment to a woman who played him. But Elijah just didn't see that woman. There was concern in her eyes, along with fear and just the slightest hint of desire. She was Isobel, he was Elijah, and they were in love. Taking out the last part threw them into a hurricane, but Elijah didn't want to find equilibrium. He was scared to admit that he still loved her. "I want you to see me as a monster so I can't share. I can't share anything good with you again. Why can't you just...accept that?" His face was blank as he spoke, his hand unmoving from her skin as he gently rubbed over the same spot.

Elijah moved with an intense concentration, his shoulders hunched as he slicked the brush across her skin. His breathing was laboured and if the room hadn’t been so eerily silent she wouldn’t have caught the words he muttered into the void between them. With every word that left his lips he continued to adorn her body with his thoughts, her skin dripping in the startling red paint he had picked. Her heart squeezed painfully in her chest, her gaze searching his face for answers that he wasn’t ready to give her. She wanted to reach out, to tell him that everything would be okay yet she was petrified of being rejected. He was confused, hurt, wrapped up in words that were poison to them both. Nothing she could say could take that away, to rip away the weeks of separation that had put them in two very different places in their lives.

“I miss you.” It was the first time she had spoken since he had pressed the brush to her throat, her fingers brushing his side as she longed for the comfort of his embrace. How many nights had he soothed her? Whispered words of love in her ear when he thought she was long asleep? “I loved you, I love you still. Please believe me.”

Elijah's motions stopped completely at her words. Feeling her delicate fingers on his flesh felt like volts going through his body. Thinking back to the time he had been back, he realized that their contact had been minimum. He hit her (more than he cared to admit), grabbed her, yelled, screamed, and yet they hadn't been close at all. He didn't want to have sex with her for more reasons than he cared to admit to himself and had forced her to sleep in a cot beside his bed. The treatment of Isobel these last few weeks had been horrible, but he did it anyways. It felt better to create this space rather than deal with the actual problem at hand. It was so much easier this way.

But she kept pushing back. It was the little things she did that drove Eli insane. No matter what, his slave was hopeful that things could go back to the way they were. Elijah felt like he couldn't let himself, but he also couldn't ignore the fact that she was still trying. He also couldn't ignore the fact that every tear she shed still ripped his heart open or how every plea was like a knife to the stomach. It hurt to be around her but it hurt more to cause her pain. Elijah still loved Isobel.

So in her light embrace, he was frozen. His eyes flicked up to hers. "I don't know what to believe anymore. It's all to confusing." Daring to do something that he hadn't in what felt like an eternity, Elijah's hand moved up to rub gently on Isobel's clavicle. He missed her touch and the way her skin felt under his hand. He missed her but had no idea how to get her back.
