A follow up...
I’ve seen a lot of talk after the video I did today and I’m trying to get an overall picture as much as I can. Some people agree with my video, some really don’t and some agree with half of it. No one is wrong and I definitely appreciate the variety of opinions because as I said, I’m not right and I am open to discuss it further.
My main regret for this video was focusing too much on what Felix did and whether I agreed with it or not instead of elaborating on the media side of it all. I did this initially because I wanted to avoid the “youtubers vs the mainstream media” narrative that’s been going around but I can see now that that wasn’t a good idea. It made it seem like I was defending them more than Felix and I was throwing him under the bus. Absolutely not my intention. I think because I’m close friends with Felix that I thought I could criticise him a bit more and explain it to him if he disagreed but to the outside viewer this isn’t apparent and looks like I just blasted him instead in front of a lot of people.
I do think there were some unethical practices at play with the media, a lot of misquoting and misrepresentation and then other articles taking that and doing their spin on it which muddied the waters more. As I said in my video, it got very messy. Also yeah, it’s a little strange that WSJ would focus on a youtuber making jokes (good or bad) rather than bigger real issues, as Felix put it “I expect it from The Sun maybe but not Wall Street Journal”.
When I said “WSJ weren’t wrong to run the story” I meant that technically it’s in their rights to do whatever they want. I don’t have to agree with it however and some parts of it did feel a little overly critical of everything while other sections flat out lied about him. Some articles literally called him “Racist” which I mentioned I knew wasn’t true.
I felt like most of this had been said by everyone else and better, so I made it a shorter talking point in my video which now I see wasn’t a good idea. It paints a picture that isn’t true. I think fear of backlash got to me a bit and I’m inexperienced tackling such large issues so I didn’t get specific. There’s no one right answer to everything but I’m not arrogant or stubborn enough to not listen to others on this and discuss it or even admit when I’m wrong.
I still stand with Felix as my friend, in fact now more than ever because he needs it. I’ve been in contact with Felix privately over all of this and have shown support since the very beginning. The insane endless attacks on him and witch hunt are out of control and going too far. We all make mistakes and should be given an opportunity to learn from them.
Sean is literally such a good friend. I'm upset that people started attacking Sean to the point of him regretting his video because he was just trying to get his thoughts out. No one should ever accuse him of throwing Felix under the bus.
There are those out there saying Felix did nothing wrong and attacking anyone who says otherwise. As much as I support Felix and love his content, even I have to admit that what he did was wrong. PewDiePie was the first channel I subscribed to when I got my account. He was so young and inexperienced at that time. I have watched him grow as I've grown, and I've watched him change. Sometimes I disagree with the paths he takes, but I will always support him.
If he can get this much love and support from one insignificant fan, then I can't even IMAGINE the support he is getting from the people who get to actually say they love FELIX. People like Sean.
Sean made a point with his video. People cannot just say what they want without facing the consequences. We all know that Felix was joking, but even he knew he was poking a bear with the subject matter he chose for the joke. No matter what joke he made I can tell he NEVER expected nor did he want this joke that he thought was a harmless joke to directly affect so many more people than just himself.
I am a college student in Missouri. I switched my major from Instrumental Music Education to Mass Media. I love all the different kinds of media and I am dumbfounded by how much talent some people have to speak their words, make a video, or create a music album and have people enjoy it and crave more. Yet even I will not defend the media completely in this situation.
Being a media student, I understand exactly WHY the WSJ took the story and ran it the way they did. The shock factor, the PewDiePie name, and the reputable news source would definitely get the story out and get it the attention they wanted. The revenue the WSJ could get from both printing the story and putting it up on their website to share using the back links they have from MANY other sites would make the story one hell of a seller. I know WHY they did it, but I don't agree with HOW they did it. Nor do I agree with what they are doing now by continuing to attack Felix after he said his apology (which I believe).
Getting the information about Disney was definitely not the way to do it especially before going to Felix. There was a lot of secrecy and manipulation in this whole situation on the media side and I don't like it. Another reason I got into media was to try to make my mark on spreading actual facts. I want the attention of the media to be where they really need to focus.
There are wars, starvation, child trafficking. All of these HORRIBLE things are going on and yet, the media is choosing to target one individual and trying to make him an enemy. There are also charities, people like Mark, Sean, and Felix who donate TONS of money to these charities to try to make a change. There are so many great and beautiful things happening in the world as well, and yet the media is focusing on Felix, and not for the good he has done.
People need to stop attacking Sean for the video. We all know the situation and we all have "chosen a side." What that really boils down to is people either agree with Felix and in turn hate the media, or the other way around. Then, there are people like me, Sean, or Ken. We believe both were at fault, but we will give Felix all the support we can offer. Sean is a great person and a great friend to Felix. Let us never forget that.

Okay so confession time
Up until this election, I held strong to the belief that my vote wouldn't do anything, which in a sense is still true, BUT never before have I actually felt compelled to vote or genuinely worried about the outcome of an election. I got fucked three ways for this election and was not able to vote, and now the results are coming in and I am seriously worried for the effects that my people will now have to face. Everyone in the LGBT+ community is freaking out right now, and for once, so am I.
