Let's Talk It Out // Ella + Emily
Thank goodness that despite everything she was dealing with, Emily was still good at compartmentalizing. At least, most of the time. Every now and then her own problems weakened her ability but that wasn’t the case at the moment. This time she’d been able to conceal her own worry and concern and managed to come across as calm, just as Ella needed her to be.
She tried not to look to long at her daughter, or to ‘profile’ her but being the girl’s mother, Emily didn’t need to. She knew her daughter. She knew when she was stressed, panicked, worried. At the moment, Ella was definitely all three. Emily doesn’t comment on that though, knowing Ella needs calm now instead of prying questions. Whatever’s troubling Ella will come out soon enough.
As Ella begins, Emily cups her own mug of tea, watching Ella carefully and nodding encouragingly. She won’t interrupt until Ella’s said what she needs to. As Ella begins to rush into it, Emily starts to piece it together. Suddenly, it’s like she’s fifteen all over again and discovering she’s the one who’s pregnant. She knows all the emotions Ella’s feeling. Well, at least most of them. Clearly Ella feels she can come to her mother whereas Emily could not. The words “I’m pregnant,” snap Emily back to the moment and her heart drops when she sees Ella ducking her head. “Ella, sweetheart,” Emily says gently and reaches for one of the girl’s hands, “Ella, that’s not a bad thing. Not to me and it doesn’t have to be to you either,” she offers a soft smile as she rubs her thumb over the back of Ella’s hand.
Ella was so afraid of letting her parents down. Being the oldest girl in her family put a lot of pressure on her. Sure she had two older brothers, but being the first girl meant that the three younger girls would look to her. Ella was always cautious on how she acted, not just to please her parents, but to set a good example for her sisters as well. There was apart of Ella that wanted to be excited about having a child, but she was terrified of how her family would see her. She wasn't married, she wasn't finished with college, and she was afraid that maybe she wasn't ready for this.
At her mom's words Ella went through a series of emotions, but the most important one being relief. Her mom wasn't disappointed, she wasn't upset with her. Ella squeezed the hand that her mom had grabbed before looking up, eyes rising to meet Emily's. "You're not upset with me?" Ella asked softly. She took a deep breath and relaxed a bit more. "I just-I don't want to disappoint you and Dad, and I was afraid-" Ella stopped sort and gave a small shrug.
The brunette ran her fingers through her hair before speaking again. "I haven't told Colton yet. I found out and I panicked and came here. I don't-I don't know how he's going to react. I'm nervous," Ella admitted. Colton had always been good to her. Since they were younger she could talk to him about anything without fear. This was different though. They had been dating for a couple years, and Ella wasn't sure if he wanted a family with her or not. She didn't know if he was ready to have a family or not.
