Evaluation

•The project wasn’t as successful as I was hoping. The process was producing interesting and effective images but further development of the process wasn’t producing the same results. Further development of the project would lead to a process that would get the same results through more careful carvings and sharper cuts to effect the film more.

•Parts of the project that were successful were initial images and the ideas of rubbing the textures into the film.

•Parts that were less successful was the final image and the woodcuts used to rub, in future a sharper wood cut would give a better effect on the film.

Although these images didn't work as well as planned some of the rubbings have still come through slightly.

edits. The results from the rubbings off the woodcuts were not successful with little to no transfer happening. As a result I have planned to "help" the images look more successful by returning to the original method that produced better results. I plan to pick the areas seal of the areas not to be scratched.

to further develop the technique I have looked into scale and woodcuts the scale in the rubbings is off so i wanted to investigate the possibility of creating images with the same scale rubbing. To achieve this i decided to make woodcuts that would be the texture to rub on.

Again the images came out very dark and there was some light burn on the end of the roll but I should be able to work with them to do the rubbings

Chris larson 

Chris Larson is a multi media artist who experiments in sculpture film and photography.

destruction, small town america. 

Larson uses his art work to investigate the relationship between man and the machine looking primarily at the moments of impact. 

Shotgun house looks at the metaphors of heroism and the collision of good and evil in human nature. He destroys the home with what small town americans uses to protect it flipping the normal connotations.

Form his art work I will look at the way he lays out the editing and also the level of destruction taking out a whole part of an image lead to questions as to why that part was removed

Lucas Samaras

Samaras is an american artist that uses both mixed media and photography.

Samaras uses the development of polaroid photographs to alter the make up of the image, editing it as the photo develops through scratches and other remediations.

Photo transformation shows the uses of scratches to alter the photography drawing it closer to a painting. the style of Samaras's work is surrealist with the end result unrecognizable as a photograph. The scratches cover the entire image except for the nose of occupant. giving emphasis to the certain body part. 

Samaras uses his works to push the boundries of physical and phycological transformation. His images show primarily himself in a journey of self discovery. 

Samaras's placement of his editing is what intrigues me, he frames certain areas applying the textures to certain areas. I will take this into consideration when I apply the textures to my film.

The first round of remediation. I found the most successful pattern was the tree bark as it was a recognizable texture and the accidental placement on the tree limbs gave the texture context and form. The gravel pierced through the film creating an interesting black pattern as well as the other markings

Proposal

Aim: I wan't to experiment with a different process of remediation, looking at the process of copper rubbings to layer texture and information into the photos. 

Method: I will start with photographing places and textures using double exposure to capture both in one image. I will then revisit the location and rub a stone over the photograph whilst on the texture to "damage" the film. 

Rationale: I find this interesting as a layering of data as well as showing another side to the object photographed. 

Output: the output will be final images along with the element that created the texture.
