If you are someone who honours Nature, how down and dirty is your practice? It’s very easy to stay too much in our heads when it comes to the things we believe. But humans are designed to do, not just to think. I believe the world around us has spirit, that everything is alive and has its own form of consciousness. I’m an animist, as as such I acknowledge the spirits of the world. By honouring, I mean building relationships. I have a particular affinity with trees, and the three willows in my back yard are good friends of mine. The eucalyptus by the gate is a wondrous spirit, and very generous. When I lost a precious piece of greenstone, he helped me find it. The three small volcanic hills in front of our house greet me by sight each morning, and I think it is past time I came to them on a deeper level. We might not find much in common, but on the other hand, how rude would it be of me not to introduce myself and hold them in honour? Like most everything, your practice should begin at home. Be the witch, druid, shaman, explorer, whatever, who knows their home intimately, who is an integral and reciprocal part of their landscape. Let the world come intimately alive around you. Be part of it. (Pro-tip - even cities have spirits of glass and concrete, of road and weed and tree and building). . . . .
