Really normal about the idea that Lisa was a fairly horrendous wife. Somewhat emotionally unattached to both Betsy and Becky, and way too invested in her work. Based on the way we’ve seen people talk about her, I think Lisa saw Becky as this undeniably affable person. Someone who effortlessly succeeded in everything she tried: being a wife, being a mother, being a police officer. But Becky tried so hard because she loved her, so she was happy to put in all the effort instead of asking Lisa to try to be better. So Lisa is left with a convenient excuse to beat down on herself without having to make any of the hard decisions that are required to better yourself.
Then she met Carla, someone who held her accountable right from the moment they met. Someone whose expectations she couldn’t seem to shirk. I think that’s a big part of what Vicky says about Carla being the love of her life, because obviously Lisa truly loved Becky, but it’s only now with Carla that she realises she has to change. Lisa is now forced to reckon with the fact she’ll lose the people she cares most about if she can’t work on caring more for herself, learning to express her feelings. And it’s hard, of course it’s hard. But Carla is by her side, holding her hand, keeping her in place, not allowing her to run from these things anymore. We’ve already seen the way Lisa’s behaviour has been changing, the way she’s growing.
In a way, Lisa felt that she withered by Becky’s side. But by Carla’s? She blossoms.
"It’s a testament to [the fans] that they’ve invested in us, and that they’ve obviously seen something in us that they can relate to—that they feel. And, also, it’s not just… Carla and Lisa, it’s always Betsy and Ryan—the whole sort of Connor-Swains. That’s really important, to show family life. But, yeah, it’s fantastic and it’s not taken for granted in any way, shape, or form. It’s truly really special to us." - Vicky Myers (x)
