An essay I wrote about my dad in grade school. It’s called The Man I Love. “He has a fair complexion his eyes are blue and deeply set in his face. His face, if you look at it has only one word to describe it. Smiley. He is fairly short. He says he’s plump but that’s not so. He only has a broad chest and shoulders. He loves kids and can play with them for hours and they never get boarded. He is the kind of person who can do anything and he knows a lot. He can play music on anything by ear. He knows everything about Seattle like the back of his palm. Sure he has his faults but I love him. He is an insurance broker and also my DAD. My dad got his student pilot’s license the day he turned 14 and his license the day he turned 16. All on float planes. “Float planes seemed easier. When you come to a lake that’s five miles long you don’t have a whole lot of decisions to make. When you’re in a regular plane, you have many more limitations. Like a runway. I found it much easier to fly floats than wheels, especially around the PNW. Around the Mojave desert you might make different decisions. Eventually I got used to wheels. They became second nature. The first planes I really loved were float planes. When I was 12 and 13, my Uncle Stan in Ketchikan, Alaska, had two things I loved: a music shop and a charter outfit with float planes. So I helped around the float plane dock and the pilots, mechanics and the ramp rats (dock staff) taught me a lot about planes and then they taught me how to fly. Everybody was so eager to share with me. I knew more about planes before I got my pilot’s license than a lot of people. People all wanted to share with me. That was typical of pilots when I was young. They loved what they did and they wanted to share it.” (at Kenmore Air - Lake Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4vSqJ1g26c/?igshid=1j2d7ujfi0gr7
Rowing is like writing a book: there are moments of sheer beauty and moments of despair. The only way to get beyond the pain is to keep at it, do your best and not beat yourself up when you have an off day. Because the beauty is worth the pain. #amwriting #rowing https://www.instagram.com/p/B4XxtByA5Ct/?igshid=1lynsae19rm3w

This is me, goggle lines and all, at the finish of the Park-to-Park Swim across Lake Washington. It’s a great metaphor for any new endeavor- you start out thinking “what have I gotten myself into?” By the second of five marker buoys you think “wow, I’m not even warmed up yet” then you hit number 3 and realize you’re more than halfway done and begin to enjoy yourself. I had a very beautiful moment when I got close enough to see the waiting crowd on the shore- all so happy and full of glee. I knew people I love dearly who always, always support me were waiting and I got choked up. (Always a good thing when you’re in the middle of a lake.) This race is about raising money for families in crisis but it’s also about finding yourself in the middle of a cold, wet place and being so tired that life becomes very clear. I’m very lucky to be so loved. (at OO Denny Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1odr1Ogll0/?igshid=110h2t2xhr2we

Looking back I realize that this book is a love letter to family. It’s about my life now: dropping everything to call my dad’s doctor, going over to my parents to help move their kitchen back into place, spending a fabulous night with @loaksmith eating Chinese food and watching Stranger Things. It’s realizing, at the end of the day that home is where your people are. You are the sum total of how present you are for those people. This book sums it up nicely because it’s a story of love between a girl and her father. The romance comes when the girl tries to protect her family’s business from a man who wants to take it. And ends up giving her everything. #writingcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/B0oPnxKgyI6/?igshid=q98rt6gjewwk

Zeroing in on my new romance, First Crush. Down to the last third. It’s set on a winery in Lake Chelan, Washington with family, lake scenery and lots of 🍷. Kind of my sweet spot. It’s a couple intent on putting each other out of business with plenty of subterfuge and a hilarious scene with drones. Enough said. Off to the editor in early August. #writersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BzO9SqaAU-h/?igshid=1jo1r9bfxrev6

Ingeniously constructed, gritty and real, eminently fun, only pages into @tjenkinsreid ‘s newest and can’t wait for the working day to be done. Skipped reading the newspaper this morning for this one. #loveit https://www.instagram.com/p/By3tKuDgfkB/?igshid=1lq26aquz3xsw
