My thoughts from January 3rd
Well, it's getting to the end of my first half of a week in FWT 2014. It started off with a fantastic learning experience as my drive from Amherst to Bennington was my first long solo-drive. It was stressful for my family as much as it was for me, knowing all about my awful sense of direction and lacking a cellphone to call anon if anything happened.
My first lesson of the term was that I am a better traveller than I gave myself credit for. I arrived at Bennington unscathed and without getting lost at all. That being said, my second lesson was not far behind.
I had to pick up the key to my apartment from someone who had been cat-sitting for the resident cats. After looking up directions for what I thought was the correct address, I learned that neither Bennington nor Old Bennington was the same as North Bennington. Being at college in town for three years already, you think I would have learned this already, but no. I'm grateful that I learned this one early anyway!
Thursday saw another new experience in driving because, having just received my license last summer, I'd never driven in snow. This also means that I'd never cleaned off a car and didn't know that snow would be only too happy to fall inside my loosely-tied boots.
The drive itself wasn't nearly so bad because my unfamiliarity with the weather conditions had me cautious enough to drive at about 15 miles an hour for the five-minute commute to the college.Â
The Bennington College Bookstore, my supplemental position, closed early due to the weather and I took that opportunity to do some banking and grocery shopping, all the while driving with great caution.
I'm renting a piece of an apartment from a fellow student whose roommate, Eryn, became mine while the usual resident was completing a FWT of her own. There will be a third person, Bre, who will be sharing my side of the apartment who won't be in until tonight. Last night, Eryn and I got to spend a good few hours bonding while cooking and eating our respective dinners.
