“Just because they had a tragic ending doesn’t mean they weren’t cute as hell,” Emilia commented, giving him a quick kiss. “I mean, we should’ve totally had it in the bag, but I guess at points it’s hard to tell who we are.”

Emilia tilted her head in confusion at his first question, but was shortly followed by a small laugh. “Oh, I guess you’re right. Miles thought it would be cute, plus we watched Titanic like a month ago.”

“Sin padre, dijo que no quiere volver,” she said into her seashell. Anyone nearby could hear the booming voice of her father’s coming back through it. “Estoy haciendo mi mejor esfuerzo. No creo que el estar flotando constantemente esté ayudando.” She paused to listen, “Padre lo siento… Si… Si… Bueno… Adiós.” She hung up and turned around to see Emilia staring back at her. “Emilia, ¿cuánto escuchaste de eso?” @emiliascnticgo
“Decent amount,” Emilia replied. “You’re right, constantly floating isn’t helping. What is their deal anyway?”

“But it wasn’t just that, was it?” Miles asked. He could only imagine what she went through but he could imagine that it didn’t leave her nights dreamless and peaceful. He shook his head and carressed her cheek, “I wasn’t sleeping. I was just pretending,” He admitted, “I couldn’t get to sleep.”
“I don’t really want to talk about it,” Emilia said, “but maybe we should talk about why you weren’t sleeping.”

Miles was only pretending to sleep. He noticed as soon as she woke up but before he could say anything, she had scrambled out of bed. He was quick to follow. He tried not to scare her but ended up doing exactly that, “Hey, hey,” He said and took a few steps into the bathroom to take both her hands in a reassuring manner, “There isn’t anything to be sorry for, I just wanted to make sure you’re okay.”
Emilia nodded at the other. “It’s okay, it was just a bad dream, I didn’t mean to wake you up,” she said.

Isa had been going out on nightly runs this past week after turning 28. She was so close to seeing 30 and it scared her. Her parents often reminding her that one day the kingdom would be passed down her. It was all too much. Birthdays were when she missed her brother the most. Heading out the door, she almost ran into Emilia. “Oh,” she said, quietly. “I didn’t mean to startle you.” She hadn’t seen her sister much since the dance… “I was going out for a run. You’re just getting in from work?”
“Uh, no, I was at Miles’,” Emilia replied. “I uh, I actually have a gift for you. I was just going to leave it, I know you’re not a big fan of your birthday, but if you want it now, I can grab it.”

“My parents have their reasons,” he shrugged softly. “It doesn’t mean I agree with the reasons completely.” Emilia sat down across from him, “I have no problems with you being a mermaid. My parents aren’t a fan of hybrids… Basically, they aren’t fans of the idea of you two breeding.” Theo didn’t say where he stood on the subject but it wasn’t the point. “That’s not what I wanted to talk to you about. We lost someone… to the attacks. Miles nearly lost you too. I guess I just wanted to check in… on you. Miles mostly. How’s he doing?”
Emilia stiffened when he said that Miles had almost lost her, but was soon followed by a scoff at his question. “How’s he doing? Seriously?” Emilia rolled her eyes. “Your parents destroyed him, that was done far before Reed died. Do you seriously not see a problem with that? You know, my parents weren’t exactly happy about me dating someone who isn’t a mermaid, but they didn’t send me away.” Emilia kept quiet over the fact that they were trying to get her to come back to the waters, but that wasn’t because of Miles. “I may not be queen, or ever be queen, but I have people too, just like you do, so I understand all the pressures that come with it. There’s a different between a follower and a leader, and if you’re going to lead your clan, I suggest you learn how you view things yourself, rather than your parents’ view, especially if you want to prove to me, or Miles, that you’re different.” If Emilia was anything, she was blunt. She never liked to sugar-coat things or keep her mouth shut. When you got the ones she loves involved, that multiplied. “So the answer Theo, is no, he’s not okay, but I’m looking after him, and he’s working on it, no thanks to your family.”

It was eleven at night and Emilia was getting back to the apartment, trying to be quiet and hopefully not wake Illiris when she was walking back in, she jumped when she heard the door of the apartment across from her open. “Jesus Isa, you nearly scared me half to death,” she said.

“You speak like you know me personally,” he mused. “I don’t recall you trying to get to know any of my family members. Therefore, the only thing you can make is assumptions.” He closed the menu and sat it down on the table in front of her. “I came here to eat however, if you’d like to talk, I’d prefer it if you had a seat… and actually be willing to hear what I have to say.”
"I recall getting to know your brother well and your family sending him away. So don’t put it on me as the reason I’m not too inclined to know anyone else in your family, but okay, I’ll hear what you have to say,” she said, taking a seat across from him. She still had to take a break, might as well be now. “But you have fifteen minutes.”

Emilia awoke with a start, her heart pounding. She scrambled out of the bed with Miles, making her way to the bathroom, trying to forget the nightmare that haunted her. She made it to the sink, splashing some water in her face. She heard a noise by the door and jumped, looking over to find Miles, “Sorry, sorry, I’m okay.”

“Hey, I know I’ve been pretty m-i-a lately, and I’m really sorry about that, but, let’s have a girl’s night,” Emilia said. “I want to know everything that’s been going on with you, and your love life. I just want things to go back to normal. You in?”

“It is safer in the water,” she said, not being able to help herself. “But that’s not what I came over here for.” Isabella looked at her sister and it reminded her of when they lost their brother. Isa had such a hard time with his death and seeing Emilia in this condition only brought up bad memories. She took the water out of Em’s shaky hands and took hers in hers. “Breathe, you’re safe right now. I promise to not let anyone hurt you while I’m here.”
Emilia took a shaky breath when Isabella told her to breathe. “I don’t want to go back to the water,” she told Isa, again. “It’s not because I don’t believe it’s not safer, obviously it’s safer considering this is what’s happening right now. I don’t care though.” Emilia knew she should, she couldn’t even keep herself from panic in a situation that seemed like it was meant to just scare people. “I love him, Isa, you should know how that feels. He can’t come with me and I’m completely and utterly in love with Miles.”

Emilia was in the corner, her hands shaking, cup of water in her hand. Emilia frowned when she saw Isa approach. Her mind still flashed between what was happening and hers and Erik’s attack. She took a step back from her sister. “I swear to God Isa, if you’re here to tell me it is safer in the waters, I am not in the mood.”

Emilia sat against the wall in the corner, the words, those cursed words echoing in her head. She put her hands over her ears, trying to block out the sound. Her mind was flashing to the attack. Emilia just shook her head when she heard someone saying something. She just wanted everything to stop, to go away. Emilia felt a hand touch her shoulder, and she scurried away from it as if it had burned her.

“Try… right,” she nodded. She had to fix her face because the disapproval was written all over it. “Something happened? ¿Pasó algo, Emilia? You almost died! You were attacked by a werewolf! There’s no werewolves in the sea. So yeah, the kingdom is safer.” When Emilia brought up their brother, Isabella froze in her tracks. Lucas was a really soft spot… She was nowhere near recovered from her brother’s death even this many years later. Before Lucas died, Isa was a different person… more carefree. She had a life outside of her royal duties. After? Everything changed so fast… Her life on the surface was stripped from her. It was still hard to wrap her head around things sometimes. She felt tears well up in her eyes but she wasn’t going to cry… not in front of anyone. “Emilia, ¿cómo pudiste decir eso?” she said, quietly. She shook her head, turning away from her sister as her tears fell. “Fine, I’ll report back your decision to the King and Queen. Adiós, Emilia.”
“You always do this,” Emilia said, turning away from her sister. “Can you please for once be my sister and not the next Queen.”
