Female Gender Stereotypes in Oscar Wilde´s "The Picture of Dorian Gray" M.A. Alexandra Langbein
While i was reading “The picture of Dorian Gray” i was thinking about what my vieuw was on this book. I noticed how females were
2. Female Gender Stereotypes in The Picture of Dorian Gray
Most of the statements about women and marriage in The Picture of Dorian Gray are stated by Lord Henry Wotton, who in general regards the female sex as being loud, silly, and unpleasant:
Ordinary women always console themselves. Some of them do it by going in for sentimental colours. Never trust a woman who wears mauve, whatever her age may be, or a woman over thirty-five who is fond of pink ribbons. It always means that they have a history. Others find a great consolation in suddenly discovering the good qualities of their husbands. They flaunt their conjugal felicity in one´s face, as if it were the most fascinating of sins. Religion consoles some. Its mysteries have all the charm of a flirtation, a woman once told me. […] there is really no end to the consolations that women find in modern life. (83)[16]
The text excerpt shows that his arguments are irrational as well as illogical. He judges females by talking about the colour of their dresses, their behaviour towards their husbands, and the way they practice religion It is before this statement by Lord Henry and the disastrous love affair with Sibyl Vane that Dorian Gray has a much more positive opinion of women.
Towards the end of the story he even claims: “I am sick of women who love one. Women who hate one are much more interesting” (130).
So, from the very beginning of Oscar Wilde´s novel is it made clear that men are put in the story´s foreground while women have to live in the shadow and are only shown in situations where they make themself look like fools[18]
Hierdoor heb ik besloten om in mijn versie vrouwen de hoofdrol te laten spelen.
