I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If perticuliar care and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.
Abigail Adams writing to her husband John Adams, May 1, 1780 (via coolchicksfromhistory)
1. I know letting go may feel like hitting pavement but sometimes staying is like getting hit by a train you’ve seen coming for miles. 2. There are symphonies that are screaming it is going to get better. Listen to the music. 3. The most fight you’ll ever feel is from inside your heart. 4. Nostalgia is only good for telling you bedtime stories. Don’t let it tuck you in at night, don’t let it keep you warm. 5. Keep the moments that you wish could live on for a gazillion years close to your heart, never let them burn out. 6. You’ll find someone that’s not them. You’ll love again and it’ll be pure and significant in its own way. 7. They remember it all. They’ll see how much you impacted their lives much later. 8. You may hate high school, but it’s when it’s almost over that you get flashes of when you were young and passed notes with your first love in art class and had talks with teachers that really mattered and you’ll want it to slow down. Take it in, there’s good in everything. 9. Sometimes the one that was your perfect match will be the one to watch you burn. 10. What’s meant to be yours will always find its way home. 11. It’s okay to change without them. Remember that you are the main character of your story. 12. Music cures it all. 13. Telling the story of how I fell in love with you still warms me from the inside out. Teach me how to let go of you. 14. Falling out of love makes you feel like you’ll never want to do it again, but the feeling of your heart dropping when he tells you he’s wanted you all these years is worth the stab at the end. 15. You jump off the cliff hoping there won’t be daggers at the bottom, and when you’re young you think you know how much it’ll hurt. When it comes, you’ll realize you had no clue. 16. My biggest fear was not being with you. I’m becoming someone without you, and it doesn’t feel right. 17. The nicer you are, the more beautiful you become. 18. One day you’ll meet again, and it’ll be just as scary and beautiful as the first time. 19. You’ll find your person. You may not recognize them at first because they’re not as shiny as they are in the movies, but you’ll know by the calm they bring. 20. Thank God for him. 21. The boy who runs in my dreams isn’t as dishonest. He holds my hand whenever I need to feel less alone and I sit around his kitchen table and talk to his mother about poetry. She goes on to say something about how statistically people are more afraid of love than anything else and the things I don’t say- tell her all there is to know about me. That I’m afraid beyond measure of what love can do to a person. Because I spent the last two years loving someone who didn’t know anything other than tearing apart the sole purpose of my existence. The boy who runs beside me in my dreams convinces me that love isn’t always teeth and bite marks. In my dreams, my scars aren’t there because I never tasted a bitter love before. The boy in my dreams loves me enough to let me meet his mother and destroys the idea that love is what I came here to die for. 22. Maybe love stays, maybe love can’t. Maybe love shouldn’t. 23. I glance off in another direction, but I always glance back at you. 24. Things that are sweet like this attract the worst kind of hungry. 25. I don’t think you’ll ever realize you changed everything for me. 26. I found faith that summer. The lips told stories I fell asleep to, the hands promised to hold on. But bliss is temporary when you pull your hands away from your eyes, and summer only lasts 3 months. 27. Let it pass; April is over, April is over. There are all kinds of love in this world, but never the same love twice.

*in the hospital helping children*
little girl: what's that cord in your nose and around your ear?
me: oh well you see i have something in my brain where i can't eat food so this little cord helps me eat.
little girl: but don't you get hungry from not eating?
me: all the time. but that's why i have this cord to help me not be hungry.
little girl: oh, so you are okay now?
me: yes, making crafts with you make me feel better.
little girl: *smiles so bright it makes me smile*
*next day*
little boy: what's those lines on your arms?
me: umm.. uh.. well you see when i run into problems that i can't quite solve these lines show up and i can't help it.
little boy: the problems hurt you, don't they?
me: yeah, a lot. but sometimes they don't hurt at all.
little boy: i'm sorry.
me: no hon, don't be sorry.
little boy: my older sister had the same lines on her arms but she's in heaven now. my mommy and daddy said she's home and happy now.
me: *tears up*
little boy: don't cry, you're safe here.
little boy: *smiles so bright it makes me smile*
So I was doing a little thinking and I thought to myself… is a failed relationship, truly a failure? And then I thought, well, fuck. It’s not. It really isn’t. I’ve taken something from everyone who has ever said I love you to me. So when the girl with freckles said she loved me, I believed that I could be loved for the first time. So when the girl with freckles broke up with me, I learned that your first love does indeed hurt in a totally different way than stubbing your toe or biting your tongue because you eat too fast– the food isn’t going anywhere, but the lovers are. So when the girl with a pretty smile said she loved me, I said I love you too without really understanding it, I still don’t. So when I left the girl with a pretty smile during the middle of summer, I understood that you can’t just say I love you just because you feel like it, you should only really say it when you fucking mean it. I didn’t mean it, like clouds apologizing about the rain– I’m sorry, I’m just full of myself. So when the girl with glasses said that she loved me, it made me sad because somewhere in there, I knew that she didn’t. So when the girl broke up with me, I didn’t shed a single tear– meaningless love, it’s never really without questions. She loved me in the same way that I loved her, we needed to happen, but only temporarily happen. So when the girl who made a heart out of dollar bills said that she loved me, I truly stopped those words from leaving my lips– because like cologne kissing skin, it’s just that, another kiss. So when I left her, I finally understood the meaning of a kiss. Some lips will press you, but you may never own the kiss. A kiss is there, only a memory– some days upon that sleeve, your heart will feel heavy. So when the girl with an apology written on her lips said that she loved me, I said right back– I’m sorry, we’re too far gone for that. Sometimes, saying no will save the both of you. So when the girl who fantasized about the world asked me to love her, I knew that the world was meant to break us. We were never going to work, we just made ourselves into something that was close to lovable. In truth? We weren’t. We just played that part well. So when I left you, I left a part of myself inside of your hips– hands that’ll hold you there in the middle of a dance, they’ll feel mine. So when the girl who loved to read books wrote poetry all over my body and called it a poem, I believed her. To this day, I still write poetry and call it a story I won’t be telling. To lovers who claim that saying I love you will make things okay, it doesn’t. You don’t start things without hurting someone. We started something for more than half a decade, I’m still learning how to say sorry for not full ending things with myself about this topic. But maybe it’s because closure comes like an ocean, I feel the right words to say, but I’ll never say it. You can call me baby, just add the word gone before and after it. I love you ended the day you said such words. So when the girl who loved to read books said that she wanted to go on an adventure that didn’t involve me– I guess I’m still looking for my adventure, one made of words, music and a dance. I write poetry, I do. Like the way music affects the body, my poetry does that to the soul. You can say I love you, just say it with your eyes. So when the girl with daisies said I love you, I wanted to believe it. But when you love a soft wind after a tornado, everything just feels too weak. My heart doesn’t beat for you, another I’m sorry. So when the girl with beautiful eyes said that she loved me, we’re just friends who hasn’t come to terms with this not being a stable relationship. So when the girl with a laugh said that she doesn’t want things to continue, I say right back, it’s okay. We can’t force love like the way I’ve been forcing a smile. So before you call yourself another failure because you can’t maintain a relationship– think about the why… because in some way, it wasn’t a total failure. You took something with you. Something real. It won’t always be perfect, no. She won’t be. The one you love last. She’ll be everything they couldn’t give. She’ll be everything you haven’t seen. She’ll be something like a new dream and darling, you’ve been waiting to sleep again. So when she wakes you up one day, just to say that she loves you… maybe one day… you’ll believe it. They say that love is out there. Your soulmate is out there. You’ll find love again. There’s over a billion souls, someone is bound to love me. Maybe, it’ll happen. But for today? The most important person you’ve been falling for is in the mirror. They say that loving yourself is a good start to finding lovers that’ll love you for who you are, because let’s be honest. How are you going to love someone and know where to start… if you barely know how to love yourself? That’s the beauty next to the beast. It’s much easier to blurt out the words I love you to them and call it love than it is to say I’m comfortable in my own skin and it’s my home. I think I want to know love, the kind that doesn’t make me question who I am or why I am, maybe a simple– I am the way I am because of the people I’ve loved is better. So one day when I look in the mirror and see her brushing her hair or simply smiling, I’ll remember everything and anything that I’ve been through without regretting a thing… because loving them then, gave her to me.

In a universe where we age backwards. We are born at the bottom of graveyards. Dust becomes bone Bone become flesh. As we enter the surface there is light. Later we will learn that they call it the sun. For now; we are wrinkled skin and slow smiles. We are assigned to younger adults who become our caretakers. Mother. Father. They teach our tongues the words of their people. We get better at remembering. But no one recalls the life before this one. We learn to walk without the cane; without the limp. At school; the best teachers are children. They tell us of all the years they have lived. Between classes we talk about what we want to be when we grow down. At graduation, the grey fades and we find out our true hair colour for the first time; women begin to bleed; their breasts rise; our bodies become firmer; the wrinkles smoothen like pressed flowers. We dance for the first time. And don’t feel tired. My caretakers are teenagers now. They’re loud and hard to understand. The scientists say it’s something with their hormones. I find that my mother skips work and listens to sad songs; she spends more time looking in the mirror now. My father cries when no ones looking; it’s hard for a man to become a boy. When we go to find jobs the younger ones interview us. When we turn 13 we will have to retire. I save money to put my caretakers into a children’s home when they get younger. Just like they did for their grandparents. I was assigned my first elderly person. He’s 95 and confined to a wheelchair. He doesn’t have any hair yet but I know it’ll grow soon. Sometimes he grabs my wrist to look at the way our skin doesn’t match. When he gets younger I’ll tell him about race; he’s too old to understand such things. I name him Luke. I fall in love with a younger man; a writer named Hercules. He says funny things like “Imagine a universe where we age backwards; where we start off babies and die when we grow old.” I try; but it seems impossible; too farfetched. At our wedding; Luke is the ring bearer. (He walks down the aisle without his wheelchair and I can’t help but cry). Hercules kisses my forehead every time we meet. Says he wants to savour the days when he stands taller than me. My caretakers are babies now. And Hercules is a teenager. There’s something different about him; he says I’ll understand in a few years. They say that my mother wouldn’t sleep the night my father passed on; that she wouldn’t stop crying for what seemed like no reason but I think that somehow she knew. He’d been asleep in his crib at the time; the passing often happens this way. Hercules holds me tighter that night. He’s started having nightmares. I guess it’s harder for a writer. To know that one day he’ll forget how to say how he feels; how to read. I wonder how babies manage it. To have all these thoughts and no way to express them. I’m eighteen today and it’s full moon. Hercules takes me to the beach and insists we bathe entirely naked. Between the waves he tells the whole sky of stars that we’re rebels now; that becoming a teenager makes us free in ways I don’t yet understand. I think that he just wants to taste everything before he dies. After sharing a bottle of wine on the sand with him and dancing to the sound of the ocean’s monologue… I believe him. Our love has changed. From candle to fireplace to forest fire. I want to touch him all the time. He likes writing poems on my skin; but says that even without them I’m the best book he’s ever read. My breasts are shrinking. And my bleeding had stopped. Though no one really understands why it happens. Hercules says maybe it served a purpose in the life before. His voice is high pitched now; more like mine; a sign of maturity. Being teenagers was hard but nothing prepared me for childhood. They say it is a lot like old age. Luke put us in the nicest children’s home he could find. It’s full of interesting people who’ve retired like us. But the babysitters are always watching. We play games during the day but they force us to go to bed even if we don’t want to. Hercules and I have to sleep in separate rooms now. Yesterday they caught Hercules trying to paint his hair grey again. He believes he can fight it somehow. He hates that he can’t stay focused long enough to finish books but he still brings me love letters; crooked hearts coloured with crayons. I stick them on the fridge and stoop so that he can kiss my forehead. When the babysitter told me that Hercules had passed on… I learnt what it felt like to be crushed. Some days I’d feel the ghost of his lips against my forehead and feel so angry. I’d cry and scream and curse. They called it a tantrum. I’m five years old now and I’m beginning to understand that the end looks so much like the beginning and that’s why they call it the circle of life.

“Do you regret it?” “What?“ “I don’t know.“ Her voice shook. “Everything.” He was quiet for a long moment. Heat flooded her cheeks. She opened her mouth to tell him to forget she asked, but finally he said, “Just because we didn’t work out doesn’t mean you weren’t the best thing that ever happened to me. Because you were.” "Yeah,“ she said with glistening eyes. “You, too.”

some simple fanfic writing tips
aka how to get people to read/like your fics, based on my experience as both a writer and reader of fanfiction (mainly on ao3). here goes.
use paragraphs. leave space between paragraphs. seriously, a big block of text with no space between paragraphs is just hard to read and readers will nope out of the fic. 3+ spaces between paragraphs? also not very appealing, but better than none.
summaries are hard to write, i know, i hate it. but you need something to clue the reader what to expect, and it can’t be “i don’t know what i’m doing just read it.” neat little trick: use a couple of lines from the fic that you think reflects the story, or that readers might find appealing and want to read more.
ao3 tags exist so that readers can look through them when they want to find specific fics of their otp, and a way to indicate potential warnings. use them for that purpose. not to ramble on pointlessly** (i personally try to add as many tags as i can so my fic shows up in many tags, but only if they’re relevant to my story. a fic with a whole fucking block of tags is one i’ll usually skip right away)
some key tags to add:
universe: is it canon or alternate universe? if canon, is it canon compliant or diverges after a point? if au, what kind of au is it? does it fall in multiple au categories maybe? (if it is canon universe, don’t add ‘alternate universe’ as a tag)
relationship: is it first meeting, friends to lovers, or established relationship?
genre: is it fluff, crack, angst, or smut?
** if you have something you want to say to your readers before or after they read your fic, use the notes. if it’s something super important (i.e. a potential trigger or a disclaimer) put it in caps and/or bolded letters to get their attention.
if there’s minor/background/past relationships, add them in the tags. add them in the ‘additional tags’; not in the ‘relationship tags’: this is so people who are looking for fic of the primary relationship can avoid those fics that happen to feature their notps, but doesn’t show up in the minor ships’ tag, flooding it with fics that don’t feature the ship as the primary focus of the story
this is all i can think of right now, just little things that will make readers more likely to read your fic, and more likely to leave kudos. i hope this is helpful, i’ll try to add more if i come up with more.
When a thing has served its purpose, it will go away. If you try to hold on to something that has already fulfilled its purpose in your life, you are going to hurt yourself. If holding on is disturbing your peace of mind, it makes sense to let go. Surrender all attachments to people and things that you have been struggling to hold on to.
Iyanla Vanzant (via wordsnquotes)
the universe has existed for billions of years and by a coincidence we ended up living at the same time. that counts for something.
