Magpie
They came and stole you in the night,
When the world was still asleep,
Peaceful dreamless slumber,
Awoken with a leap.
•
Black and white was your shroud,
As they took your bones away,
My breaking heart became a force,
That turned the sky to grey.
•
That dreary day the streets were calm,
No single sound was heard,
We said goodbye to all you were,
And hello to a bird.
•
The fates owed us a lifetime,
To grow old and wise with you,
Skin as rough as stone
Not young and soft and new.
•
I see you in every cherub boy,
With golden glimmering hair,
I see you in every cheeky grin,
Too beautiful to bear.
•
Oh how I have pined for you,
To see your face once more,
With teeth spread ear to ear,
As you stand outside my door.
•
But all I see when I look outside,
Is an omen of your death,
That wretched single magpie,
Who haunts my every breath.
•
Is he in you? Are you in him?
Is it you who follows me?
If that is so the rain can stay,
Please just let it be.
•
The world can weep, the clouds can cry,
And you will not reappear,
A magpie sits and stares at me,
Relieving all my fear.
