Emily's Mini Mousery

Hello everyone! My name is Emily, I live in Surrey, UK and this is my blog. It's all about my mouse breeding project, it's purely for fun and to gain some experience in breeding and caring for animals. Unfortunately the day after Agnes gave birth I found all but one of the babies dead and half eaten :(. The last was hardly alive but I did manage to get it to eat some watered down kitten milk before it finally passed away. Anything could have caused Agnes to reject her babies, she might have known there was something wrong with them or she could have just not been ready to be a mother. It was only her first litter so in a month or so I will attempt to mate Agnes and Isaac again and hopefully her instincts will kick in.

So, I heard some squeaky coming from Agnes' cage last night at about 10. I didn't want to disturb her but was getting really excited. This is what I found this morning!! 8 tiny tiny little babies! Didn't want to disturb mum for too long so she didn't get stressed out :).

During the night Agnes culled her peanut runt. It was for the best as the little fella would have needed a lot of looking after and it wouldn't have been fair on the other babies. The mother knew he wouldn't make it to adulthood so she did the kindest thing. 7 babies left :).

This little baby seems to be the runt, he's half the size of the others and is very skinny and delicate. Not sure if he will last, 8 is a lot for a first time mum so he might not be able to get all the milk he needs. Lets hope its a happy ending for this little jellybean.

The babies are here!!! 8 tiny babies were born last night so they aren't even 24 hours old yet. I really shouldn't have done this but I couldn't help taking some photos whilst Agnes had something to eat.

And this is Agnes today :) looking pretty ripe. My pair have been together for 20 days now and gestation on average is 21 days so could be any day now. Very exciting, will keep y'all updated. Sorry for the poor quality pictures.

These photos are from 2 days ago. Agnes is starting to look rather plump. Still very active and eating well, lets hope it's a baby bump and not that she's just over weight :).

Got my first pair of mice today in the hope that they will breed. The male, Isaac, is a pink eyed Satin Champagne and the female, Agnes, is a black eyed blue-tan. Around 10 weeks old they get along really well and both have beautiful coats so I can't wait to see what they produce!

Baby Theodore is so small! He was the runt of his litter and the lady i bought him from isn't sure if he will make it to adulthood or not. we'll see...
