EMOJI FRIDAY: Today's design is inspirited by Van Gogh's painting 'still life of potatoes in a yellow dish'. Tonight at Vincent op Vrijdag x Volkshotel visitors will design many more Van Gogh emoji! Check this website for more information. 🎨👂🌻
Yesterday I gave another emoji workshop for children at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, with some great suggestions for new emoji. Look at this eating spaghetti emoji!
Instead making more abstract, and therefore universal, emoji - a trend I would recommend - Facebook wants to personalise their reactions with replacing the generic icons for your own face. This is revealed by a new patent filed by Facebook earlier this month.
By using facial recognition technology, it appears Facebook wants to sort through your tagged photos to find faces that best match the emoji you meant to use. Typing ;) would be replaced by a picture of you winking. Hmm 🤔
EMOJI FRIDAY: As a reaction on Google's proposal for professional woman emoji I created this cartoony, gender neutral and therefore universal computer programmer.
A team of Google employees proposed a set of 13 professional women emoji to the Unicode Consortium. With this collection their goal is to: “highlight the diversity of women's careers and empowering girls everywhere”. The symbols are created in a rebus-like way. For example the nurse is created by a combination of a woman emoji and a hospital emoji. With this method, it can easily change in a man figure. The team wants to get the new emoji standardized by the end of 2016. There’s a big chance they will succeed, because one member of the team Mark Davis is also co-founder of the Unicode Consortium.
Unless I think this method is a very cool way to create many variations, it also becomes more complicated. With the limitation of available pictograms, I think a better way to keep all users satisfied is to simply make them look less human-like. Unfortunately, this is the opposite of Google’s current strategy.
Yesterday, one of the children participating in my emoji workshop made this great new emoji for a smartphone addiction. 💛
The American telecommunications company created this cool emoji sculpture to share the message “Don’t text and drive”. The sculpture is titled: “The last emoji”.
It was fun to give an emoji workshop in the Volkshotel in Amsterdam yesterday! A lot of new emojis were created, including a brainfart emoji, a ‘duh’ emoji and one with headphones!
EMOJI FRIDAY: A month ago I got a request for a Hang Loose Emoji, a well-known expression for surfers and skaters to tell others that everything is OK, have fun or relax. Send me your request via [email protected]

EMOJI FRIDAY: Every Friday I will post an emoji proposal. I myself often use these (a bit ambiguous) symbols 💦👅 due to a lack of a mouth watering emoji. This one would be better 😉. PS Let me know what emoji you’re missing via [email protected] 🙏
From now on I will post an emoji proposal every Friday. This one is made by Leo during the emoji workshop I gave at the Instituut voor Beeld + Taal. It’s a looking to the future emoji.
