Its extra funny when we think about how smart and responsible person Olruggio is but he still chases after Qifrey to literally everywhere.

Manga reader spoilers :

Olruggio is actually very fragile.

Olruggio is in-canon a burnt-out gifted kid. Because he was so advanced on spells, he was sent to a mission far too risky with an all adult team in the snowy lands up north, but a blizzard stroke, he could only save two of them, and kept blaming himself, as if it was HIS JOB to SAVE THE ADULTS ! He was then sent to the undersea great hall, left his country and culture behind him, we can guess because the people usually caring for him died, and that nobody wanted to take care of the "broken" version of him. He was very confident before the blizzard. Adults tend to be assholes to gifted kids : they get jealous, they overwork them, and then when the kid starts having kid needs, they neglect them.

The first kid he met in the great hall was a very confused Quifrey, who had just been saved from the dark forest. He saw Quifrey and thought "snow", that's how homesick Olulu was. Then he saw Quifrey walk straight through a magic door into the sea and start drowning.

The author does not explain what Quifrey's intention was here, I see two possibilities :

either it was a suicide attempt.

or the huge memory loss deprived him from so much common sense that when he felt the need to leave the great hall, he just tried walking out because he thought the door was "magic" enough to protect him. Remember, Quifrey had his magic knowledge erased with his memory at this point ! He didn't know how anything worked.

Olruggio tried to cry out for adults to come help him, but nobody was here. So Olulu had to be a savior once again, trembling, crying, screaming, he improvised spells to drag Quifrey back in only to see the adults come in when it's all over, and blame them for "flooding" the halls, as if there were silly kids doing non sense just to spite the adults. He then tried to touch, comfort, and befriend Quifrey, but Quifrey could feel the tree growing in him at every attempt from Olulu to comfort him, so he rejected Olulu again and again, not knowing why he felt that way, and feeling guilty about it. Quififi then tried to leave the halls and rush to the tome tower again and again, and got mad at Olulu for trying to help and save him because he could "get hurt". And Olulu had to explain that Quifrey him self getting hurt was AS BAD.

Then the relationship kept this dynamic : having to remind each other that they are supposed to try staying alive. Again and again. As Quififi keeps trying to save all the children, and Olulu keeps trying to save Quififi and the villagers around them.

i think an important thing to note about qifrey and beldaruit's dynamic is that qifrey does truly care for and respect beldaruit a lot — he's just weird about it because beldaruit is so embarassing to be around.

The way all of Qifrey's signature spells aren't just water, they're water formed into sculptures, flowers and creatures and creations. The way his most signature spell, the water dragon, is a spell he crafted for Beldaruit, a spell that does nothing at all. It just looks pretty. The way Agott is fascinated with the old creature glyphs, because they dont serve a purpose, they don't need to, they just make a spell more beautiful. How freeing she finds that idea, of not needing to be useful. Her sharing the glyphs with Coco and asking her to just make magic for herself. Olruggio burning himself out creating contraptions, and not finding drive again until he heads up on the roof and weaves creatures of light that do absolutely nothing.

"A gentler kind of magic" indeed. It's art. It's art all the way down.

xisuma had to rebuilt parts of grian's code from scratch to keep him alive. grian was a canary avian once but xisuma had to use what he had access to and so grian became a parrot avian
